Baseball Officially Rolling; Dismantling Dominguez-Hills 14-4
4/8/08

Box Score

Cal State San Marcos baseball got its school-record 7th straight win on  Tuesday, dismantling Cal State Dominguez-Hills 14-4.

Jared Suwyn was his usual self on the mound, giving his team a very solid start.  The Cougar ace went six strong, scattering 8 hits and allowing 3 runs, while striking out 2 and walking 2.  He picked up the win to even his record at 2-2.

At the plate, Dane Ponciano provided the pop.  The big Cougar catcher unloaded on a ball in the fourth, drilling a three-run homer to right.  Ponciano had four RBI's on the day.

Senior rightfielder Terry Moritz also had a big day, going 4-for-5 with a homer, 3 runs scored and 2 driven in.  Moritz has been the team's most consistent player both at the plate and in the field this season, and is hitting well over .350.

It took the Cougars a while to get going on Tuesday.  Ponciano drove in Tristan Gale in the second, but CSUSM was down 2-1 entering the fourth.

That's when CSUSM's offense caught fire.  The Cougars batted around, scoring 9 runs on 9 hits, many with two-outs.  Moritz got it going with a one-out single, and Jackson Chapelone drew a walk to set up Ponciano's three-run shot.  After a groundout, Johnny Omahen dropped a key bunt single to third, keeping the inning alive.  Omahen, the squad's smooth-fielding shortstop, had quite a day at the plate in his own right - 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.

With Omahen on first, Jason Hinton sliced a single to left, and Louie Russo drove them both in with a big double down the leftfield line.  Austin Way knocked Russo in with an RBI base hit, and Tristan Gale kept the merry-go-round spinning with an RBI double of his own.  That brought up Moritz, who crushed his two-run homer, making the once-close game a 10-2 laugher.

That would be all Suwyn and the Cougar bullpen needed.  Reliever Eric Julienne took over in the seventh, throwing two innings of one-run ball.  He struck out two and didn't walk anyone.  Lights-out reliever David Julio pitched a perfect ninth to secure the victory.

CSUSM is now 17-14-1 on the year, and looking better than ever.  They've got a couple weeks off before taking on La Sierra on the 20th.
