Steve Scott’s Cougar track & field team continued its march to Nationals this weekend, competing at an event named after him – the Steve Scott Invitational at U.C. Irvine (his alma mater).

With Nationals just a couple weeks away, CSUSM’s top athletes were in top form at the large event, which featured teams from UNLV, San Diego State, and Oklahoma, among many others.

Cross-country All-American Sergio Gonzalez appears poised to earn that honor on the track this year.  The distance runner competed in the 1,500-meter run, finishing 9th out of over 60 runners with a time of 3:54.  Teammate Tony Guadagnini was not far behind, running 3:56 to finish 12th.

Fellow All-American Samantha Showns took 17th in the 400-meter dash, timing in at 58.13.  Showns also runs on the women’s 4x400-meter relay team, which took 3rd with a time of 3:56.

Ashleigh Davis, another top-rated Cougar athlete, completed the 100-meter hurdles in 14.35 seconds, good for 10th place.

Billy Walker ran a blistering 10.73 in the 100-meter dash in the prelims, then 10.95 in the finals to finish 13th.  He also helped the men’s 4x100-meter relay team to a 5th place finish in 42.56 seconds.

Aaron Parker took 9th in the 110-meter hurdles, timing in at 15.05.

Kyle Hughes continued to finish well in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, taking 5th on Sunday with a time of 9:30.

The men’s 4x400-meter relay team had a nice performance taking second with a time of 3:16.

In the pole vault, David Freund cleared 4.60 meters, which he has done consistently this season, and finished 6th.  Also in the field, Ronnie McFadden finished 12th in the discus with a throw of 43.71.

And CSUSM’s duo of 400-meter hurdlers, Cory Dart and Kevin Ott Wright, continued their push to both earn All-American status.  They finished 7th and 10th in 52.30 and 53.22 seconds, respectively.
