Score CSUSM softball's
first ever trip to the playoffs ended on Tuesday, as the squad was
bounced this afternoon after a 7-3 loss to Biola. As
with this morning's game against #1 Cal Baptist - a 2-0 loss for
CSUSM - the Cougars hung tough for most of the contest before
falling behind late. CSUSM got on the board in the first
inning, as Karen Morizi reached on an error, and came around to
score on a Shanti Poston single to right. Biola
struck back with 3 in the second, but the Cougars would tie it back
up in the third. Elizabeth Bush singled to lead off the
inning, and beat a throw to second on a sacrifice bunt by Morizi.
Erica Coelho would move both up a base with a bunt, setting the
table for Poston - who once again delivered a big single, driving in
both runs. But it would go
downhill from there for the Cougars. Biola recaptured the lead
in the fourth, and tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh,
capped off by a Keena Levert home run off reliever Brenna
Sandberg. While
today's losses sting, they certainly don't overshadow the strides
this Cougar softball team has made in just its second year. In
2006, the squad was 10-31; they finish this year with a 27-19
record, a top-25 ranking, and a trip to the playoffs under their
belts. With just one senior on the roster, expect Cougar
softball to only add to that list of accomplishments next year and
beyond!
