A couple weeks after pulling a huge upset of #1 Cal
Baptist, #22 Cal State San Marcos faced off again with the mighty
Lancers – this time in the Regional playoffs. While CSUSM put up a
valiant effort, a couple late home runs and an untimely triple play
led to a 2-0 defeat.
The Region II playoffs are double-elimination, so CSUSM will be
fighting for its playoff life at 1:00 PM today when it takes on the
loser of the Biola/Point Loma game going on now.
The morning game was a pitcher’s duel, as CSUSM’s Melissa Lerno
dueled Cal Baptist’s Melanie Ahumada for five full scoreless
innings. The Cougars had a tremendous opportunity to get on the
board in the fifth, as Lerno led off with a single and Lauren Nelson
reached on an error. But with both runners going, a bunt attempt was
popped up, and the Lancers turned a crippling triple play.
CBU wasted little time in capitalizing on the sudden shift of
momentum, as Nikki Low and Sara Hurlbut launched solo home runs in
the sixth, providing the game’s only runs. Amy Thomas came in to
close out the 2-0 contest.
