It was cold.
It was rainy. And it was a record-setting day for Cal State
San Marcos women's golf, who braved the elements to hold onto third
place at the National Championships Friday at Lake San Marcos CC.
Playing in a
virtual monsoon, the Cougars held off British Columbia and Bethel to
retain the third spot. CSUSM
finished just eight shots back of Oklahoma City, who leapfrogged
Embry Riddle on Friday to claim its fourth consecutive national
championship.
Senior Carly
Ludwig, competing in her final event in Cougar blue, earned
All-American status by finishing in a tie for sixth in the overall
standings. Ludwig shot
82 on Friday – a very solid score considering the conditions –
and +28 (316) on the four-round tournament.
Second on the
team was Natalie Todd, who capped off her impressive Nationals debut
with an final-round 85. The
sophomore finished tied for 21st with a score of 323.
Next on the team
was senior Adrian Bormann, who finished her Cougar career by tying
for 35th with a +40 (328).
Ellyse Siu wasn’t far behind, tying for 45th
with a +43 (331). And Kate Hansen, a day after shooting the team’s best round
of the tournament (a third-round 74), finished up her Cougar career
in 60th place with a +49 (337).
The individual competition was won by Bethel’s Shann
Page, who shot +20 (308) for the tournament.
Next year, the event will move from the (usually) friendly
confines of Lake San Marcos to South Dakota.
