Coaching Staff

Steve Scott, Head Coach

A member of the United States Track and Field Hall of Fame, Steve Scott came to Cal State San Marcos in 1999, and has spent the last decade distinguishing himself as a coach much the same way he did as a runner.

As a collegiate runner at U.C. Irvine, Scott won the Division II 1,500-meter championship between 1975 and 1977. He won the 1,500-meter Olympic trials in 1980, but the U.S. team boycotted the games in Moscow. In 1981, he set the American record for the mile (3:48.68) and 1,500-meter (3:31.96). He bettered his mile record to 3:47.69 the following year, setting a mark that stood for over 25 years. Scott won the silver medal in the 1,500-meter at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships in 1983 and competed in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.

Over the course of his career, Scott was the national outdoor 1,500-meter champion six times. He has run the mile in under four minutes a record 136 times.

Following his track career, Scott became an assistant coach at Azusa Pacific University in 1993. His leadership helped the team to a national third place finish in his first year.

Since coming to Cal State San Marcos in 1999, Scott has achieved remarkable success. As the architect of the University’s track & field and cross-country teams, Scott has built them from the ground-up over the last decade into perennial contenders in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). He has brought hundreds of CSUSM athletes to Nationals, coached dozens of All-Americans, and been honored multiple times as the Region II Coach of the Year.

Anthony Herr, Assistant Coach

A standout performer on the Cougar track team, Anthony Herr graduated from Cal State San Marcos with a B.A. in History in 2005, and joined the coaching staff the following fall.  In his time as a collegiate runner at Cal Baptist and CSUSM, Herr earned All-American status four times.  His time of 10:10.57 in the Distance Medley Relay still stands as the CSUSM school record.
