Cougar Summer Softball Camp:  The Cougar Softball Camp will have hands-on training in all aspects of throwing, fielding, hitting, base running, pitching, and catching. Actual games will be played and a strong focus will be placed on game situations. Discussion on strength and conditioning, as well as college options will be offered.

May 28 -- 2008 Softball Season in Review:  Turning the Corner
On April 19th, 2008 Cal State San Marcos Softball officially arrived.  Granted, the squad had already been ranked as high as #20 in the nation, earning numerous big wins in the process.  This, however, was different.

May 6 -- PLAYOFF UPDATE:  Cougar Softball Loses 2-0 to #1 Cal Baptist
A couple weeks after pulling a huge upset of #1 Cal Baptist, #22 Cal State San Marcos faced off again with the mighty Lancers – this time in the Regional playoffs. While CSUSM put up a valiant effort, a couple late home runs and an untimely triple play led to a 2-0 defeat.

April 29 -- Softball Headed to Regional Playoffs!
Congratulations to Cougar Softball for earning its first-ever trip to the Region II Playoffs in just the second year of the program!  More details will be announced as they become available.

April 22 - Softball Takes Two at Hope
Cougar softball solidified its bid for the Region II playoffs on Tuesday, sweeping Hope International in a double-header by scores of 2-0 and 7-2.

April 20 -- Softball Loses Pair of Close Games to UCSD
One day after pulling an upset of #1 Cal Baptist that sent shockwaves through the NAIA, #20 Cal State San Marcos softball faced another daunting task in NCAA opponent UCSD.  While the Cougars put up quite a fight, they ended up on the wrong end of 1-0 and 8-5 games.

April 19 -- Softball Stunner:  Cougars Upset #1 Cal Baptist!
As the last home date of the season, Saturday marked the first-ever Senior Day for Cal State San Marcos softball. When the games ended, senior Leilani Madrigal and her teammates had a memory that would last a lifetime. 

That’s because the Cougars pulled a shocking upset of #1 Cal Baptist on Saturday.

April 15 -- #21 CSUSM Softball Swept by #2 Point Loma
Cougar softball has been playing great lately, but ran into a buzz-saw on Tuesday at Point Loma.  CSUSM was swept by the #2 Sea Lions, losing 8-0 and 2-0.

April 12 -- Softball Scratches Out Split with Concordia
In a pair of games with serious regional playoff implications, #21 Cal State San Marcos split with Concordia University in an evenly-matched double-header on Saturday. The Cougars couldn’t capitalize on numerous opportunities in game one, falling 4-1; but bounced back to win game two 3-2 on a walk-off suicide squeeze.

April 9 -- Softball Earns #21 National Ranking
Cal State San Marcos softball is only in its second season, but the program is already making a mark in the NAIA.  That was proven by today’s national rankings, which listed CSUSM as the #21 team in the nation.

April 5 -- Softball Splits Important Double-Header at Biola
In a double-header with major implications to the regional playoff picture, Cougar softball split a pair of games at Biola University on Saturday.  CSUSM won the first 4-2, but lost the second 4-0.

March 29 -- Softball Splits with Hope International
Playing at home for the first time in three weeks, Cougar softball fought to a split with Hope International in Saturday’s double-header.  CSUSM won the first game 9-3, but couldn’t quite complete a late comeback in game two, falling 5-4.

March 27 -- Softball Upsets USD!
Brenna Sandberg's brilliance on the mound and Holly Russell's clutch hitting  keyed the most impressive victory in CSUSM softball history on Thursday, as the Cougars bested the University of San Diego 2-1.

March 22 - Softball Stays Unbeaten at Sun West Tourney with Pair of Close Wins
Cougar softball showed a lot of mental toughness on Saturday, winning a pair of close games at the Sun West Tourney on Saturday.   The Cougars defeated Williams College 6-5 in the morning, and beat Tufts University in the afternoon in walk-off fashion.

March 21 -- Lerno Throws No-Hitter, Coelho Hits Two Homers; Softball Twice a Winner at Sun West Tourney
It was a successful day at the Sun West Tourney for Cougar softball, as the squad easily dispatched of Avila 11-0 in the morning, and held on to defeat St. Thomas 5-3 at night.

March 19 -- Softball Loses Two Close Games to #10 Vanguard
Cougar softball traveled to Vanguard on Wednesday, and though CSUSM fought valiantly against the #10 team in the nation, the Cougars eventually lost both ends of the double-header 2-0 and 6-5.

March 12 -- Cougar Softball Loses 6-0 to USD
Facing an NCAA Division I opponent for the first time this season, Cougar softball went to the University of San Diego on Wednesday looking for an upset – but the Torreros had other ideas, winning by a score of 6-0.

March 9 -- Lerno K’s 13 as Cougar Softball Sweeps Dominican
A day after Ashley Salvino threw a no-hitter, Cougar softball extended its winning streak to six games with a pair of wins over Dominican. The first came on the strength of 13 Melissa Lerno strikeouts – though CSUSM needed a two-out extra inning rally to pull out the 5-4 victory. The second was a much easier 5-0 win.

March 8 -- Salvino Throws No-Hitter, Barth Hits Two Homers, and Cougar Softball Rolls to Two Wins
Cal State San Marcos softball improved to a very impressive 14-6 this year on Saturday, on the strength of a pair of routs at the Sun West Tournament.  The Cougars dispatched of Bethany 8-0 in the morning, and capped off the day with a 9-0 win over Northwest Christian.

March 1 -- Twice is Nice:  Softball Sweeps Azusa Again
Azusa Pacific came to San Marcos on Saturday looking for revenge after CSUSM swept them in Azusa earlier this season.  But the surging San Marcos squad had other plans, shutting out Azusa in both ends of a double-header to sweep them again.  CSUSM won game one 4-0, and rode a Brenna Sandberg 2-hitter to a 2-0 victory in game two.

Feb. 26 -- Softball Loses 1-0 to Point Loma in Make-Up Game
Cal State San Marcos softball traveled up to Point Loma on Tuesday to complete a previously-postponed game from February 14th, and though the Cougars played them tough, CSUSM ended up falling 1-0.

Feb. 23 -- Softball Sweeps on Final Day of SoCal Smash
Competing at the SoCal Smash on Saturday, Cougar softball handily defeated Holy Names University 6-0 in the morning, and Southern Oregon 8-2 in the afternoon.  The wins leave CSUSM with an impressive 3-1 record at the event, and 10-5 on the season.

Feb. 22 -- Softball Rained Out
The second day of Softball's SoCal Smash has been rained out.  CSUSM, who went 1-1 on day one, will play Holy Names tomorrow (Saturday) at 9:00 AM.  If the Cougars win that game, they will play in the championship game against #2 Cal Baptist at 3:00 PM.  If they lose to Holy Names, it will go to a tiebreaker, and they may play in the consolation game at 1:00 PM.

Feb. 21 -- Softball Splits on First Day of SoCal Smash
Cougar softball began competition at the Cal Baptist-hosted SoCal Smash on Thursday, splitting its first pair of games.  CSUSM easily dispatched of Southern Oregon 8-1 in the morning, before falling 5-0 to the host school in the afternoon.

Feb. 14 -- Softball Hangs Tough with #3 Point Loma, But Falls 4-2
Facing brutal conditions and the #3 team in the NAIA, Cal State San Marcos Softball played quite admirably, but fell 4-2 on Thursday to Point Loma.  The loss drops CSUSM to 5-4 on the season.  Game two was scheduled, but rained out.

Feb. 12 -- Cougar Softball Sweeps Azusa Pacific
Tuesday was a great bounce-back day for CSUSM softball, as the Cougars took both games of a double-header at Azusa Pacific.  The wins bring CSUSM to 5-3 on the season, equaling half of the squad's win total from all of last season.

Feb. 10 -- Cougar Softball Fights Hard, but Loses Pair of Games to Redlands
Facing three time defending SCIAC Champion University of Redlands, Cal State San Marcos softball, put up a fight, but lost both of Sunday’s games. CSUSM fell in game one 3-0, and lost game two by a score of 9-5.

Feb. 9 -- Oh, Mercy!  Cougar Softball Blasts Bethany
On Saturday, the only mercy Bethany softball (0-7) received came via the rulebook, as the Cougars (3-1) posted impressive victories by scores of 10-0 and 8-0. Both games were shortened due to the 8-run “mercy rule.”

Feb. 3 -- Sunday Softball Postponed
The Cougars' softball game today (2/3) has been postponed due to rain.  Reschedule date has not yet been announced.  The team's schedule has been updated to reflect this.

Feb. 2 -- Cougar Softball Looks Great in Opener, Splits with Biola
Kelly Warren’s debut as CSUSM Head Softball Coach was successful on Saturday, as the Cougars (1-1) earned a split with perennially-strong GSAC foe Biola University (1-1). The Cougars dropped a hard-fought game one 6-4, but rebounded on the strength of ace Melissa Lerno to win game two 2-1.

Jan. 17 -- Softball's 100-Inning Game Canceled
 
CSUSM softball's 100-inning game, originally scheduled to be played this month against USD, has been canceled due to a USD scheduling issue.  Instead, Cougar Coach Kelly Warren's team will perform 100 hours of community service.

Sport History:
Cal State San Marcos debuted its softball program in 2007.  Competing in the NAIA's difficult Region II, the Cougars were able to pull off some upsets over GSAC schools, finishing the season with a 10-31 record under Head Coach Jennifer Milo.

When Milo accepted the position of Associate Athletics Director following the season, Kelly Warren was brought in to coach the team.  The squad matured throughout the season, pulling off some notable upsets, including a win over #1-ranked California Baptist.  CSUSM finished the regular season with a 27-17 record, earning a trip to the Region II playoffs.
