Agua Caliente Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Cahuilla
Established: 1896
County: Riverside
Acreage: 31,610
Population: 296
Location: Approximately 6,700 acres lie within the city limits of Palm Springs.
Reservation also includes a network of canyons just southwest of Palm Springs called
Indian Canyons, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the
wealthiest tribes in the state, the Agua Caliente reservation is the largest land owner
within the city of Palm Springs. In 1992, the tribe bought the Spa Hotel and Mineral
Springs, the natural asset that first drew indigenous Cahuilla to the palm oases.
The tribe will be building a second casino, along Interstate 10, and will become the first
in the state with two casinos. The tribe operates quite independently from the Bureau of
Indian Affairs.
Library: Agua Caliente has a lovely Cultural Museum in
downtown Palm Springs that has a museum-based library.
Nancy Watt, tribal librarian, is developing a small collection
that serves the museum.
