Cabazon Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Cahuilla
Established: 1876
County: Riverside
Acreage: 1,706
Population: 38
Location: Seven miles from the community of Indio and eighteen miles from the city of Palm
Springs. Cabazon could be characterized as one of a few "urban reservations"
in California, along with Agua Caliente. This tribe was the first tribe in the state to
establish high-stakes bingo in California - resulting in the "Cabazon decision"
in 1987 which paved the way for Indian gaming in the state.
Library: Cabazon has a nice Cabazon Cultural Museum that is directed
by Cultural Programs Manager, Judy Stapp. The "library" at Cabazon consists of
bookcases lining walls of the tribal conference room, mostly law books and code books,
materials to assist the tribe in business and sovereignty issues.
