Campo Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Kumeyaay
Established: 1893
County: San Diego
Acreage: 15,480
Population: 270
Location: Southeastern San Diego County atop the Laguna Mountains, near the community of
Campo.
Campo sits upon a 4,000-foot plateau in the Laguna Mountains, enjoying light winter snows
and cool breezes in the summer. From the hilltop tribal complex that includes the
community center, health services and tribal office, one enjoys spectacular views of the
surrounding rocky, chaparral laced landscape, a distant old expansion bridge and the
adjacent colorful old church and Indian cemetery.
Library: The Campo library was established under the ILSP (Indian Library
Services Project) as administered by the San Diego County Library Outreach Division in the
mid 1980s. The library is situated within the Education Center and has nearly 1,000
volumes and relies on federal grants for basic services and collection enhancement.
Deborah Cuero, Campo's Education Director, has been involved in tribal education efforts
for nearly twenty years and showed the new library room that has wall to ceiling wooden
shelves, built by a tribal member. Deborah expressed an interest in networking resources
with nearby La Posta and Manzanita reservations, both equally as remote from the rest of
the world.[ View Photos of this Reservation
