of the Sierra Nevada Range. Ft. Independence was once a U. S. Army fort that was
abandoned in the late 1800s and later occupied by the Paiute people, becoming a
reservation in 1915. Mt. Whitney towers over Ft. Independence which has a few buildings, a
campground and a few pastures.
Library: It is unclear as to whether or not Ft. Independence has a
library. Tribal Hall staff, working out of a small trailer, indicated that a library grant
was received in the past and that there are plans to include a library in a new education
center.
