Fort Mojave Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Mohave
Established: 1870
County: San Bernardino, California; Clark County, Nevada; Mohave County, Arizona
Acreage: 38,000
Population: 600
Location: Near Needles, California, along Arizona State Hwy 95. The Mohave still occupy
some of their traditional land along the Colorado River in California. The reservation
lies in three states with the site of the old fort on the north end and a sacred site of
lava furrows called Rock Maze on the southern end, along I-40. Tribal offices, community
center, gym and the education center are all adjacent to one another. A healthy
agri-business and a casino (on the Nevada side) give the tribe needed resources.
Library: The library is currently located within the Ft. Mojave
Education Center with plans to move to a new building in 2003. Leona Smith,
library director, is working with tribal council on plans for the new
library. The collection numbers around 900, mostly tailored to the
reservation's K-12 school children. A computer lab borders the current
library/activity room and has nine new computers, two with internet access.
Networking the computers and updating the book collection are two priorities
as well as staffing the library that is open 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday. Currently, Education Center staff help children in finding
needed materials. The new education center holds the hope that the cultural
center and library might combine resources and services.
