La Jolla Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Luiseņo
Established: 1875
County: San Diego
Acreage: 8,541
Population: 162 (tribal enrollment: 620)
Location: Southern slopes of Mount Palomar, off State Highway 76, 25 miles east of
Escondido, near the community of Valley Center and 60 miles northeast of San Diego.
Unlike the rest of the region's dry brush landscape, La Jolla enjoys wooded, green lands
that border the upper San Luis Rey River. The campground and water park provide the tribe
with some economic base. The tribal complex includes a small mission with an Indian
cemetery, recreation fields, Head Start and education center.
Library: The library was established in 1989 under the Indian Library
Services Project (ILSP) as coordinated by the San Diego County Library Outreach Services
Division. The collection of approximately 2,500 volumes, includes notebooks containing
notes of cultural and historical importance, and created by elder, Henry Rodriguez. La
Jolla has made intermittent attempts to staff its library but is not currently staffed.
Access is currently possible through Education Center staff. Plans are in place to apply
for tribal library grants that might support staffing and collections for this promising
little library.[ View Photos of this
