Manzanita Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Kumeyaay
Established: 1893
County: San Diego
Acreage: 3,579
Population: 93
Location: In southeastern San Diego County, about 67 miles east of San Diego on Interstate
8, near the town of Boulevard and in the Carrizo Desert.
Manzanita, named for the bush common to this dry high desert region, occupies a rectangle
of upland valley, meadowland in the western part of the Carrizo Desert.
Library: Manzanita has a nicely arranged library of about 2,500 volumes
on newly constructed shelving and situated in the MAC building, across the reservation
from the tribal hall. The library shares space with a multi-purpose room, so open hours
are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The library is not officially staffed
but grant writers, custodians and other tribal staff who work in the building help
students, when possible. An adjacent computer lab of eight computers, two with internet
access, was donated in part by TTANF (Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), has
a sizeable collection of educational software, and enjoys consistent usage. Tribal staff
who work most closely with the library's collection expressed frustration in the lack of
automation of the collection and will be pursuing grants for this purpose.[ View Photos of this Reservation ] |
