Mesa Grande Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Kumeyaay/Diegueño
Established: 1875
County: San Diego
Acreage: 3,500
Population: 70
Location: Near the mountain community of Santa Ysabel, off the intersection of Mesa Grande
Rd and Black Canyon Road. The Mesa Grande reservation is only a few miles from the
Santa Ysabel reservation and while residents are closely related to Santa Ysabel people,
the people at Mesa Grande enjoy their autonomy and geographically remote location. The
reservation is scenically situated on a cluster of hills above the forests of Black
Canyon, which are part of Cleveland National Forest. The reservation's residents have a
few small farms, some cows and horses and maintain a simple, quiet life. Plans for a new
Tribal Hall are underway and the tribe is interested in building an educational component
into their community.
Library: The reservation's library has one bookcase, consisting mostly
of donated materials and some core reference materials needed for tribal governance. The
new Tribal Hall will house the education center, fire department and the new library.
