Santa Rosa Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Cahuilla
Established: 1907
County: Riverside
Acreage: 11,293
Population: 110
Location: In the Santa Rosa Mountains, near the town of Anza. Santa Rosa borders the
hot, dry Anza Borrego desert but due to its 5,000 feet altitude, enjoys a more temperate
weather. The 8,000 ft. Santa Rosa Peak is nearby and provides for some of the rain and
snow in the area. Pine trees dot the landscape and residents are very protective of the
purity of their wilderness plateau.
Library: The "library" at Santa Rosa currently exists in
boxes. Two years ago the tribal hall burned down and tribal government operations moved to
a leased storefront in the small town of Anza, sandwiched between a laundramat, a real
estate office and a dentist's office. Thomas Tortez, Tribal Administrator, explained that
several years ago the tribe had plans for a library and a sizeable collection of donated
materials was stored in anticipation. Plans for a new building are likely to include room
for a library so grants are being pursued to help establish a library for this small,
private, but friendly tribe.
