Sycuan Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Kumeyaay
Established: 1875
County: San Diego
Acreage: 640
Population: 120
Location: About 20 miles from San Diego and 6 miles from El Cajon between Interstate 8 and
State Highway 94.
Sycuan is the oldest reservation of the Kumeyaay people. The tribal offices and community
center sit on a small hill overlooking a chaparral dotted valley. An old chapel, tribal
cemetery, fire department and school are near the large casino, newly expanded and
refurbished. Sycuan recently purchased the popular Singing Hills Resort and Country Club,
three miles west of the reservation. This makes Sycuan the first tribe in San Diego County
to own a golf course.Library: The tribal library, was originally
opened in the early 1990s. A large ceremony was held to mark the opening of
the spacious new library. The library's resources have been relocated within
the activity room of the Sycuan School which now has approximately 600
volumes, less than 25% of the original collection. The library tutor, Sonia,
works to provide students with the help they need in using the library's
small collection and computer resources (one with internet access). Plans
are in limbo as to whether or not the tribe will hire a person solely
responsible for overseeing the library operation (02).
