Biographies

Bonnie Biggs (bbiggs@csusm.edu) , project director for the Tribal Library Census and Needs Assessment grant, has been involved in the area of tribal library development since 1989. Her research has focused in this area and she has published a number of articles in the field (bibliography below) as well as presented at numerous library and American Indian conferences. In 1998, Biggs was elected to serve as the President of the American Indian Library Association, an affiliate of the American Library Association. She currently serves as Chair of the Subcommittee on Library Services to American Indians, ALA Office of Literacy & Outreach Services. Biggs has visited over fifty tribal libraries in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and California and continues to work closely with tribal libraries in her own backyard -- the San Diego North County region. Biggs has been a member of the library faculty at California State University, San Marcos since its inception in 1989. She is Assistant to the Dean, Coordinator for Public Services and Coordinator for University Arts and Lectures.

Gunnar Biggs (gbiggs@csusm.edu), is a musician/educator who has had an interest in tribal library development for nearly twelve years. He has visited more than fifty reservations in California, New Mexico, Arizona and Oklahoma. He has taken photographs (with permission) on many reservations to document the development, growth and centrality of libraries as educational hubs for tribal communities. Gunnar Biggs

Garrett Collins (garrett@csusm.edu), Academic Webmaster at CSU San Marcos, has been a friend to the local tribes since 1991.   He has worked with Native American groups at Palomar College and at CSU San Marcos to promote local Pow Wows.  He has also donated his time as a lecturer at Rincon Reservation on several occasions to support technology within the Head Start program.

Garrett made these web pages from Bonnie's dream; and, after Bonnie and Gunnar Biggs, he would like to thank his friends Della and Sam Kolb (Luiseño), and their family, for gifting him with their friendship.

Shirley Wilson (swilson@csusm.edu), provided administrative support for the Tribal Library Census and Needs Assessment project. She handled all budget, correspondence, packet assemblage, duplication, contracts, meeting schedules, news clippings and coordinated the logistics for the final "Gathering of Voices" meeting for tribal librarians at Cal State San Marcos.

Shirley is the Administrative Support Assistant II for University Arts & Lectures and comes with a strong background in Fiscal Operations.

Cheryl Leen (cleen@csusm.edu ), Administrative Support Coordinator for Arts & Lectures at Cal State San Marcos, worked tirelessly for months to organize “A Gathering of Voices II” on August 8, 2002 and maintains the Tierra Del Sol Tribal Libraries Group listserv.

Cheryl is Chippewa-Ojibwa.
