APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS

 The Unified Port of San Diego has part-time employment opportunities for college level interns to perform job assignments that are closely related to their area of study.  Any full-time college or graduate level student may apply for consideration for vacancies.

Total scheduled work hours shall not exceed 1,250 hours per year.  A maximum of twenty (20) hours per week during the school year and up to forty (40) hours per week during school breaks are authorized, if work is available.  These positions do not include benefits.

 PROCESS:

 

INTERN I:

College level students currently enrolled in at least twelve (12) semester units at an accredited college or university, majoring in a field of study closely related to current vacancies, may qualify for Intern I appointments.  Students in their final semester/quarter who need less than full-time enrollment to graduate with a 4-year degree need only be enrolled part-time in courses required for degree completion, with verification from the registrar.

 

INTERN II:

Students in a graduate program leading to an advanced or doctoral degree enrolled in at least nine (9) graduate semester units in an accredited college or university, majoring in a field of study closely related to current vacancies, may qualify for Intern II appointment.  Graduate students in their final semester/quarter who need less than nine (9) semester units to graduate need only be enrolled part-time in courses required for degree completion, with verification from the registrar.

 

COMPENSATION:

Hourly rate depends on total number of units completed.  Interns are not eligible to receive fringe benefits such as paid leave, holidays, retirement and/or any type of insurance.

The San Diego Workforce Partnership, Inc. (SDWP) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a public/private partnership of the City and County of San Diego and business, education, labor, government and community leaders. Since 1974, the Workforce Partnership has invested more than one billion dollars, targeting education, job training and employment resources for San Diego residents.

We offer many programs and services throughout the region including labor market information, and select low or no cost services to local businesses, including onsite consultation to provide customized recruitment strategies, training assistance, and access to workforce development dollars. Through a network of six regional One-Stop Career Centers, and two youth centers, employers and job seekers can access employment information, resources and tools.

Internship Qualifications: typically most SDWP internship opportunities are open to undergraduate college student(s) preferably with junior or senior standing in a field of study/major close to the work experience desired with the SDWP.

Positions: If you are a good communicator, great with the intricacies of detail and accuracy and multiple project management---as well as being positive, proactive, responsible and resourceful—this is the place for you!

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIPS

Incredible opportunity for sharp individuals to learn in a highly dynamic environment as part of the Marketing & Communications team for the San Diego Workforce Partnership. 

The Marketing & Communications Team is a combination of community, public and government relations. We support the communications needs for the organization, our three governing boards, and our regional network of One-Stop Career Centers.

Internship Qualifications: open to undergraduate college student(s) preferably with junior or senior standing. Those with communications, journalism, writing, advertising, marketing, graphics design, and/or related coursework/work-experience preferred. Willingness to learn and an interest in community and social issues is a plus. Must have own transportation. Bilingual (Spanish) ability desirable. We are seeking someone comfortable with the Microsoft Office Suite, Internet/email. While not required, knowledge of Mac (G4) graphics programs: Illustrator 8.0, Quark Xpress 4.1, Photoshop 6.0; Pagemaker 6.5 is a plus.

Position is a mix of marketing, media, corporate communications, public relations, creative and administrative duties. Support includes writing, broadcasting and pitching press releases, calendar advisories, and producing collateral materials, such as brochures, press kits, flyers, giveaways, signage, etc.; assist in coordinating special events; writing and placing articles, ads, newsletters (on PC and Mac platforms) for our boards and staff; photographing events, and special projects. Not only has our Internship Program proven to be a phenomenal learning experience, it's also served as the launching pad of many rewarding careers. It's a great way to get hands-on experience in a world-class company, alongside some of the industry's most talented (and even famous) professionals. Although not always possible, all internship hiring is done with the long-term goal of hiring the student upon graduation, thus increasing the quality of the Sun's future talent pipeline for entry level hires. Unlike many of our competitors Sun offers the ability to participate year round. Sun employs an average of 650 interns US wide over the summer. Approximately 350 stay on part time during the school year. This allows you continue to contribute and network all year long.

At Sun, you will be treated as a respected member of the team and will be given professional responsibility. Here at Sun we provide you with real opportunities to work on projects. No getting coffee or perfecting the art of filing here. Internships are practical, project-oriented assignments with a defined beginning and end date. There are three types of internships available:

How do you qualify?

You must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be registered as a full-time student during and following internship in an accredited university obtaining a degree in furtherance of Sun's business.(This typically means that undergraduate students are enrolled in 12 units and graduate students are enrolled in 9. Ask your university registrars office what Full time is for you. Documentation will be required.)

  • A Bachelors, Masters, MBA or Ph.D. degree in progress in one of the following majors:

  • Computer Science

  • Electrical, Computer, Mechanical or Industrial Engineering

  • Information Systems;

  • Marketing;

  • Finance;

  • Human Resources;

  •   Business Administration.

  • Demonstrated strong academic achievement in a technical or business curriculum

  •  Maintain 3.0 GPA or higher

  •  For business specific opportunities, students must possess the unrestricted right to work in the U.S.

  • Be committed to the duration of internship which is generally 10-12 weeks (although Internships can be repeated over subsequent summers by the same student until graduation)

COMMUNICATIONS: PUBLIC RELATIONS

Qualifications:
An undergraduate or graduate student interested public, community and media relations for the arts. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and basic computer skills. Must be good with people and have an interest in theatre communications. Personal vehicle, a sense of humor and a flexible schedule are also a plus. 

Responsibilities:
Public Relations interns will have the opportunity to be intimately involved in the day-to-day workings of a world-renowned theatre’s communications department. Work involves development and distribution of press kits and press releases, maintenance of press archives and clippings, compiling program material, attending department meetings, errands and various administrative tasks. 
Other opportunities outside of the Public Relations department include participating in the development and distribution of marketing and promotional materials; representing and promoting La Jolla Playhouse productions at community events in the San Diego area and assisting the artistic department in various rehearsal-related tasks. 

Expectations:
Intern should be a self-motivated student with a keen and lively interest in learning about the world of public relations and the theatre.  Full-time and part-time internship opportunities for both summer and fall are available.

COMMUNICATIONS: MARKETING

Qualifications:
An undergraduate or graduate student interested in marketing, graphic design and/or advertising. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; a basic knowledge of computer applications (MS Word, MS Excel). A person with an interest in the theatre with good people skills. A sense of humor is a must. Knowledge of or experience with DreamWeaver, Illustrator, In Design and Photoshop is always a plus. A personal vehicle for distribution of La Jolla Playhouse marketing and sales materials is a plus, but not a requirement.

Responsibility:
To assist the Communications department in the daily tasks of marketing and graphic design. Communications Interns have the opportunity to be intimately involved in the inclusive workings of a world-renowned theatre’s communications department. A Marketing Internship involves graphic design and assistance, management and distribution of promotion materials, representing and promoting La Jolla Playhouse productions at community events, attending department meetings, maintaining records, market research and other administrative duties. 

Expectations:
A self-motivated student intern should be interested in the learning process of graphics and marketing in the performing arts. Full and part-time opportunities available for summer and fall.

GENERAL MANAGEMENT

Qualifications:
An undergraduate student interested in arts administration including artist contracting, budgeting, external business communications, artist/agent relations, union relations and human resources. Students in finance, business and arts administration are encouraged to apply. Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills and computer skills including Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, internet and Access. Personal vehicle, a sense of humor and flexibility to do a wide variety of tasks is important.

Responsibilities:
Intern will work on the following projects: aiding with first rehearsal duties and contracting actors and authors; assist in coordinating out of town auditions; assist in contract drafting and offer process; manage union and counsel files regarding Actors' Equity and LORT; research tasks via internet and historical records; help create new systems for organizing production information; keep current files on productions; ensure actor, author and agent databases are kept current (using Access); aid with posting open job descriptions; respond to external information requests; and filing correspondence, faxing, copying, errands

Expectations:
Intern will work on multiple projects simultaneously: prioritizing is important. 20 hours per week is desired. It is preferable to have hours spread evenly among the days of the week due to daily tasks, b/w the hours of 10:00 am - 5:30 pm.

COMPANY MANAGEMENT

Qualifications:
Interns must have strong personal and organizational skills.  Must be able to represent the La Jolla Playhouse to all visiting artists in a professional and friendly manner.  Must be able to handle many tasks at once as well as work independently. Must be able to handle a flexible work schedule. Intern must have a current driver's license and good driving record and be over the age of 21.  

Responsibilities:
Intern will be expected to be a very good troubleshooter and be able to work well with vendors and guest artists. Intern will run errands; assist the department with special events.  

What to Expect: 
Company Management is a high energy department.  Intern will gain a thorough and unique knowledge of the day-to-day operations of the Playhouse. Will meet and interact with professional artists and La Jolla Playhouse staff.  Intern will help with daily tasks and support and plan large events for the institution.  Should expect to work varied hours and to be in constant demand. Company Management is full of excitement and fun -- there is rarely a dull moment.  Positions open in the Summer, Fall and Winter.

COSTUME SHOP

Qualifications:
An undergraduate or graduate student with an interest in costume design or construction. Must have worked as a stitcher or in an entry-level position in a costume shop. Must be eager to learn, responsible, and have good communication skills. Must be able to take direction. 

Responsibilities:
Intern will work under the supervision of the shop staff on the building of costumes - both new construction of costumes and alterations. Will work on both home and industrial equipment. Will also be responsible for some craft work, depending on production needs. 

What to Expect:
Intern will learn excellent construction skills and will build period and modern dress clothing in a professional shop. Intern will strengthen skills and learn about new garments, periods, and theatrical styles. Positions available in the Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall semesters. Year-long positions will also be considered.

FINANCE

Qualifications
An undergraduate student interested in the financial aspects of arts administration including audit preparation, accounting, budgeting, cash management, financing, vendor communications, payroll and benefits administration. Students in finance, business and arts administration are encouraged to apply. Must have pleasant phone manner, excellent written and verbal communications skills and computer skills including Microsoft Excel and internet. Familiarity with accounting software a plus. Aptitude for detail, a sense of humor and flexibility to do a wide variety of tasks are important.

Responsibilities
Intern will work on most activities of the finance department including data entry for accounts payable, cash disbursements and deposits; account reconciliation; research; filing, faxing, copying and errands.

Expectations
Intern will work on multiple projects simultaneously; will assist the finance staff with routine tasks and special projects. Flexible weekly schedule of 15 to 25 hours per week; opportunities available throughout the year.

FUNDRAISING / SPECIAL EVENTS

Qualifications
A graduate or upper-level undergraduate who has an interest in theatre administration and/or fundraising, including special events. Intern must have strong written and verbal communication skills, be detail oriented, have basic knowledge of computer/word processing and be willing to perform a wide variety of tasks. Flexibility and willingness to learn new systems and physical tasks are essential.

Responsibilities
Assist with general office correspondence, department mailings, prospect research, data entry, photocopying and filing. Intern would also help support and staff special events.

What to Expect

ARTISTIC DEPARTMENT

Qualifications
A student with a strong theatre background who is interested in exploring the day-to-day operations of an Artistic Department in season production. Intern must have excellent word-processing and organizational skills, and have interests in casting, new play development and artistic administration on all levels. Intern must have a car and a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities
The intern will assist the Artistic staff in a variety of administrative tasks, from general correspondence to assisting with local casting. Other duties may include running personal and professional errands, assisting the Artistic staff in a new play workshop and script reading and dramaturgical research.

What to Expect
The intern will have exposure to all workings of the Artistic office, including casting, general administration, literary management and dramaturgy. Positions are full-time or part-time, and are available year-round.

DRAMATURGY

Qualifications
Intern must have a strong theatre background, excellent reading, writing and analytical skills, as well as research experience. Intern must have strong word-processing and organizational skills, as well as an interest in experiencing the day-to-day workings of an Artistic Department in season production.

Responsibilities
Intern will assist the Literary Manager and Associate Artistic Director in the reading and evaluation of scripts; dramaturgical research; assistance with the season selection process; ongoing organization and maintenance of the Playhouse library and other administrative tasks. The intern may serve as assistant to the dramaturg during production.

What to Expect
Intern will have exposure to literary management and dramaturgy. Will gain experience as a script evaluator and researcher, as well as gain knowledge of the dramaturgical process and the workings of a regional theatre's Artistic Department. Positions are full-time or part-time and are available year-round.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

ADMINISTRATIVE EDUCATION INTERNSHIP
Qualifications
An undergraduate or graduate student with a background and passion for theater and education. Administrative and computer skills a must. Working knowledge of Excel, Access and Outlook a plus. Intern must have strong personal and organizational skills. Must be able to handle many tasks at once, work independently and be open to a flexible work schedule. Sense of humor a must!

Responsibilities
Intern will be expected to assist the department with special events at the Playhouse, including Discovery Sunday, Pay What Can and ACCESS performances. Administrative and organizational support with school programs in the community such as residencies, annual POP Tour, Young Performers' Workshop, High School Conservatory and daily tasks.

What to Expect
Intern will gain knowledge of the day-to-day operations of the Playhouse and education programs. Will work with teaching artists, stage management, La Jolla Playhouse staff, parents, children and patrons. Expect to work hard, interact with fabulous people, be inspired and make a difference. Never a dull moment! Full and part-time positions available in the spring, summer, winter and fall semesters. Year-long positions will also be considered.

PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

Qualifications
An upper-level undergraduate or graduate student who has a strong background in stage management or production management. Intern must also have good organizational and communication skills and must be able to work independently.

Responsibilities
Duties my include data entry of accounts, office correspondence, filing and troubleshooting. Intern will be privy to confidential information and must be able to exercise professional discretion. May be required to serve as run crew for a show in the season.

What to Expect
Intern will be exposed to the production of a show from beginning to end. Expect to work as run crew for a production. Will gain a strong understanding of production management. Will have contact with directors, stage managers, designers, actors and technicians. Positions available in the spring, summer, winter and fall semesters. Year-long positions will also be considered.

PROPS

Qualifications
An undergraduate or graduate student who has a background in scenic design or prop construction. Must have a basic knowledge of tools, painting and sewing. Intern must have a willingness to learn new skills and must have a sense of humor.

Responsibilities
Intern would be in charge of the general maintenance of the work place, i.e. re-stocking, clean up. Would assist the Props team on large projects. Would be involved in prep work, finish work, shopping and research.

What to Expect
The intern will gain knowledge of all aspects of prop work: tools, techniques, construction, painting, sewing and upholstery and safety lessons. Summer positions open.

Qualifications
An undergraduate student with some experience running shows. Must be able to follow directions, be punctual and responsible and be able to work an eight-show week, Tuesday through Sunday.
