The ARTSmobile: Bringing the Arts Directly to You!
Announcing FREE(!) ARTSmobile residencies for Fall 2009...
Please stay tuned for details on the application process...The ARTSmobile is a vehicle to provide arts education to thousands of children, parents, and teachers. The founding idea for the ARTSmobile was to bring the arts to children, since so many children do not have access to the arts in schools, and fieldtrips have been severely limited because of school budgets. Building on the long established networks and arts education professionals of Center ARTES and partner SUAVE (Socios Unidos para Artes via Educacion, or United Community for Arts Education), the ARTSmobile will immediately begin fulfilling its mission as a vehicle for arts education for students and teachers throughout San Diego County.
The van itself is an exciting and dynamic artistic piece. Its exterior features colorful, musical artwork designed by Greg Evans, Luann comic strip writer and Center ARTES board member. The ARTSmobile will offer students numerous programs and activities (including, but not limited to the following):
* A.R.T.4U-A delightful and interactive performance by the robot A.R.T.4U and his two mad-cap scientist friends. They take the audience on a somewhat wacky and educational adventure that touches on ballet, hip-hop, poetry, visual art, and music. A.R.T. 4U was donated to Center ARTES by nationally syndicated cartoonist Greg Evans.
* Mobile Puppet Theater-A moveable theater for puppets and other performances. Ongoing partnerships with local storytellers and organizations make possible ready-to-go performances that focus on mythology, folk tales from around the world, shadow puppetry, and more.
* Art and Music Activities-Artists (with materials) and musicians (with instruments) visit schools to conduct interactive programs to supplement classroom curriculum in various subjects (e.g. social studies, science). The van may also be used to transport paintings and sculptures to schools for special exhibitions and installations.
The ARTSmobile is immediately available for visits to all San Diego County schools. Fees are calculated on a sliding scale based on the choice of programs and the economic means available to individual schools/districts and their populations. Fees will range from completely underwritten to $1,000 for multiple programs.
The Center ARTES ARTSmobile has long been a dream of our Executive Director, Dr. Merryl Goldberg, as a way to expand and advance the rapidly developing field of education in and through the arts.
Center ARTES would like to thank the Mangrum Family Trust and Ken Grody Ford for their generosity in helping make the dream of the ARTSmobile into a reality.
