Access to the Arts:

Center ARTES is committed to the belief that regular, equitable access to the arts has a powerful, transformative effect on children and their families. It is central to our mission to provide students numerous points of access to the arts, including events both on campus and off. We offer an extremely wide array of possibilities, including making certain performances and events available in a bilingual (English/Spanish) format. Following are a few brief examples:

ARTSmobile (Average cost between $300 and $750 per event. Underwriting is available):

With our new ARTSmobile, a wide variety of programs are available to go! Examples include:

  • The Robot Show: Two mad scientists from different cultures communicate through the arts and ART4U, Center ARTES' own all-knowing robot!
  • Mobile Puppet Theater-Have an outdoor venue? We'll pull in and perform.
  • Spinning Wheel Players- Storytelling, Music, Puppets: Folktales from around the world.
  • Mythologram Theatre-World myths: Perseus, Pele, Quetzacoatl, Inanna, Isis & Osiris, more

Classroom Art Activities ($50 per classroom hour):

  • Tempera Paint: Symmetrical Butterfly, Sunflower in Pot, Color Wheel.
  • Watercolor Techniques: simple watercolor landscapes.
  • Generic portrait and human figure drawing.
  • 3-D Paper Landform Pop-up
  • Drama: The Clay Pot, The Magic Box, The Magic Line, Voice Intro
  • Music: La Bamba, Cantos de Pil�n , Nature Sounds, Introduction to Rhythms
  • Movement/ Dance: The Invisible Rope, The Square Boat, The Fish Dance

School Performances and Assemblies (Average cost between $300 and $750 per event):

  • You're the Actors: Popular Children's Books Come Alive
  • I Was SO MAD: Dealing with Anger in Healthy Ways
  • Peace Tales: How to Work Things Out in a World Full of Fighting
  • Trouble Trials and Tribulations: World Folktales about Solving Problems
  • True Tales of California
  • Ghost/Scary and Not Too Scary Stories from Around the World
  • Spinning Wheel Players: Puppet Theatre with Music. Trickster Tales by Gerald McDermott: ZOMO, The Trickster Rabbit from West Africa, and Jabuti' The Tortoise, an Amazon tale.
  • Interactive Music Assemblies: students learn music terminology and basic playing techniques, and make connections with Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts.
  • Puppetry focused in legends and mythology from the ancient Americas, Asia, and Africa.
  • Songs, Dances and Games from Around the World.
  • The Noble Deer Shadow Puppet Show: A traditional Indian folk tale from the deer park where Buddha is said to have given his teachings. Adapted for American audiences.
  • History comes alive with this theatrical presentation of Pablo Tac, an 11 year old Luiseno boy who was the first to write a history of his people. Curricular connections also available.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish storytelling assemblies available, including: Legends/Leyendas: Folktales from Mexico; and storytelling programs for Cinco de Mayo, Dia de Los Muertos, or Dia de Los Niños.

Residencies (Prices vary according to program length):

These programs range from a single week to several months or a year. They give students and teachers extensive exposure to and specific skills in selected artistic disciplines and curricular connections. Let SUAVE arts coaches bring the arts face to face with your teachers and students.

  • Trickster Tales: Puppets and playmaking, by arrangement with author Gerald McDermott.
  • Maskmaking: A fabulous springboard into creative writing. 3 sessions or more.
  • Puppetry & the Imagination: Learn about the magical world of puppetry; the many kinds useful in the classroom, and improvisation using the 5 W's of writing. 3 sessions or more.
  • Mythologram Theatre: Create a myth in your classroom. Students participate in masked acting & object puppet theatre, learning acting vocabulary and techniques.
  • Drawing: Generic Portrait or Human Figure proportionately. 3 one hour sessions.
  • 3D Paper Techniques: create animals, collages, and landforms. 2 - 5 one hour sessions.
  • Paper Mosaic: create art with geometry. Individual or class murals. 2 - 3 one hour sessions.
  • Watercolor: techniques to create landform scenes or animals in habitat. 3 one hour sessions.
  • Clay: basic hand building techniques to create bowls, sculpture, etc. 3 - 4 one hour sessions.
  • Painted Class Mural, depending on size; 4 - 6 one hour sessions.

Extensive Residencies, 6-8 weeks, 2-3 times a week:

  • Drama 101 (3rd-8th)
  • Visual Arts 101 (K-8th)
  • Percussion Instruments 101 (K-8th)
  • Simulated Stained Glass (3rd-8th)
  • The Art Explorers (students will travel through time to interview artists, and learn about their techniques in order to create their own master pieces) (4th-8th)
