MAY 25 ACTIONS AGAINST GOV'S 'REFORMS' IN L.A. AND SACRAMENTO
Thousands of teachers, public safety officers, firefighters, nurses and
other workers joined forces last week to send a message to the governor
and his allies that his so-called reform package was not acceptable to
the citizens of California.
More than 20,000 filled the state Capitol’s south lawn at the steps to
protest the governor’s plan for a special election that would put
measures on the ballot that would devastate the public sector. Thousands
more gathered in Los Angeles’ Pershing Square to unite against the
governor’s agenda. CFA members attended both events.
New CFA Secretary John Halcon was at the L.A. event with colleagues from
CSU San Marcos and said the rally was rejuvenating. “People were very
enthusiastic,” he said. “It was very inspiring for me to understand that
there were so many other people involved. Not just us.”
CFA Vice President Lillian Taiz spoke in L.A. about the need for unions
and how important it is to remain united in this fight with the
governor.
CFA President John Travis spoke in Sacramento and told the crowd there
that we must oppose the governor’s agenda to protect the future of the
working people of this state. Travis said: “We are here to stand
together to hold the governor to his promises, including the promise
California made to all its citizens in the Master Plan for Higher
Education more than 40 years ago: every qualified Californian has the
right to an accessible, affordable, high-quality public higher
education.”
