| HOME | CFA Chapter President’s Report May 2005 Dear Colleague, On April 15th-17th six members of our Chapter attended the CFA Statewide Assembly in Sacramento. We heard an excellent presentation by Sheila Slaughter from the University of Arizona on “Academic Capitalism” and a report by Dean Tipps, Director of SEIU State Council, on how the labor movement is organizing against the Governor’s legislative agenda. We also participated in discussions on CFA’s continuing fight for more resources and heard about the upcoming bargaining with the CSU. We will likely start the fall with an extension of our current contract. Check our new website for news throughout the summer. I will also send updates of major events through email. I encourage you to become more active and to join CFA if you are not a member. The Chancellor’s Office and his bargaining team will be more likely to hear our demands for a fair contract if he sees that we truly represent the majority of the faculty. PLEASE get involved! I’m sure you have heard about the moderate dues increase. While we always hate to see things like this, our chapter has received only three responses against the proposal. Many of the ads you are seeing on television of teachers and firefighters attacking the Governor are in part paid for by CFA. As you can imagine, these ads are very expensive. In my opinion this is a good use of our money as these ads and other efforts have caused Arnold’s attacks to lose momentum. Finally, I want to thank your superb CFA chapter team for their work and support this year; David Avalos, Mayra Besosa, George Diehr, John Halcon, Linda Holt, and Lance Newman. Thanks also to our staff member, Jackie Teepen and our student intern, Tasha Iglesias. Hope you have a well deserved rest over the summer. Janet Powell, President |
