San Marcos Student Reports Back from April 20 Protest in Sacramento April 2005 I really enjoyed my trip last week to Sacramento, where my fellow students and I represented Cal State San Marcos in our plea to the Legislative committee. We met on the lawn outside of the State Capitol Building where we dressed in black to signify the death of the California Dream. Governor "Job Killer" has made college so expensive that it's killing opportunity and prosperity for California. It was a very visual protest: we walked around with tombstones and a casket like mourners and pallbearers. The Lt. Governor came to speak at our site, and his speech was truly wonderful. I got to testify before the Higher Education Committee when the subject of financial aid came up. Here is my speech: "My name is Debbi Trussel. I am from Cal State University at San Marcos. I plan to teach in Special Education working with severely handicapped students. There was a time when people referred to these children as 'retarded.' But to 'retard' is to hinder. If financial aid is reduced and my fees go up, my opportunity for an education is hindered. The Governor's financial aid proposal makes me wonder who the "retarded" person really is. Frankly, I think it's the Governor! Please set aside one third of our fees for financial aid. Thank you." I really enjoyed myself. Being a part of something is important, even though it was a long ride up and back. Debbi Trussel |
