Meet Dr. Adam Shapiro
Dr. Shapiro brings a record of academic success and leadership experience to his role as the dean of CHABSS. Previously, he was Professor of Sociology and founding Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of North Florida. He served in multiple leadership capacities at North Florida including Sociology Graduate Program Director, the Institutional Effectiveness Team, and most recently as Chair of the UNF Council of Chairs.
As Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Dr. Shapiro provided administrative oversight for a multi-disciplinary department. He focused extensively on programmatic and faculty development, which led to the hiring of nearly half of the current department, the implementation of a faculty mentoring program, enhancement of distance and hybrid courses, and the development of an accredited program in social work. Committed to community engagement and fundraising, Dr. Shapiro oversaw multiple community partnerships and helped to establish his department’s first three endowed scholarships.
An expert on social gerontology and family sociology, Dr. Shapiro has received several externally funded grants and contracts and has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and chapters. Dr. Shapiro holds a B.A. from the University of Florida with Honors and election to Phi Beta Kappa, and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin.
