“The CoBA Advisory Board is an ambassador of CoBA to the outside world, supporting and promoting its mission, vision, values, and objectives, influencing its growth and educational outreach, enabling the community to become aware and supportive of its programs and needs.” –CoBA Advisory Board Mission
The College of Business Administration (CoBA) Advisory Board developed a Contract with CoBA that outlines initiatives focused on developing the College’s student and community relationships, as well as activities to help offset the effects of the state budget crisis. They have committed to raising $300,000 over the next academic year. On Friday, August 19, President Karen S. Haynes, Provost Emily Cutrer, and Vice President Neal Hoss met with the board to offer their endorsement of the Contract.
Development of this Contract was motivated by President Haynes when she issued her “call to action” in January 2009 in response to the dire budget situation facing California, the CSU and CSUSM. She asked the campus to be innovative in developing solutions to this crisis. As a result of this call, a group was formed including CoBA Advisory Board members, faculty, administrators, and students to conduct a brainstorming session in May 2009 on possible alternative sources of revenue and cost containment ideas.
Task forces comprised of faculty, administrators, board members and students spent hundreds of hours creating a 3-year Strategic Plan for CoBA which established a revenue generation target goal of $180,000 in 2010-2011. Upon the achievement of that goal, the Advisory Board decided to set a new target goal of $300,000 for 2011-2012.
“We are very pleased that the President and Provost have endorsed the contract,” says Interim Dean, Dr. Regina Eisenbach. “This endorsement, along with the support of the Board, sets CoBA on the right path to move forward over the next academic year.”
Nine committees within the board have been developing their action plans over the past three months. Seven of the committees outlined plans to reach a specific fundraising goal. Some ideas focus on building upon existing successful programs such as Senior Experience, CoBA Partners, and the CoBA Wine, Food & Brew Festival.
New ideas have also been proposed that will strengthen CoBA’s brand and visibility in the San Diego business community, specifically a leadership speaker series and entrepreneurial workshop series. These new programs leverage CoBA’s existing business partnerships to create valuable educational opportunities for business professionals.
“Our contract clearly demonstrates the level of commitment that CoBA's Advisory Board has to our college's faculty, staff, and students,” says Chairman of the Board, Ron Gerevas. “We have every intention of doing all that we can to support the growing needs of this educational institution.”
