Nu Upsilon Undergraduate Research Conference, Dec. 3

The 2008 Nu Upsilon Undergraduate Research Conference will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Markstein Hall.

There will be over 30 undergraduate research projects presented in two poster sessions at the conference, each of which represents an original project conducted by seniors at CSUSM. Four faculty members from across campus will judge the posters to recognize outstanding work both with a recognition certificate and in the post-conference proceedings.

This year's conference activities include some very unique and thought provoking presentations.

•  We are excited to announce that "Dangerous-isms" will be on display throughout the day. This interactive exhibit on racism, ableism, and heterosexism is presented by Craig Leets (CGU graduate student), Sara Sheikh, and the CSUSM Cross Cultural Center Team.

•  The Student Film Festival will feature over 25 short films produced by CSUSM students. Each brief film illustrates an interdisciplinary analysis of experiences or situations related to differences in abilities. Specifically, Human Development seniors applied the understanding they achieved in earlier courses to examine a socially relevant “real world” problem or situation in human development (2008 Topic is Disability or Differences in Ability) and consider the topic from the perspective of several disciplines. The films include observations, interviews, and interactions with persons throughout north San Diego County.

The afternoon activities include a panel of community members from health and human service professions and a graduate school and exam workshop.

•  Mari Steffensmeier of the CSUSM Career Center has assembled a distinguished panel of health and human services professionals from our local community for an enlightening discussion of their careers and trends within these fields. Panels members include - Jim Dagostino, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Twin Oaks Physical Therapy; Jeff Horne, Behavioral Specialist Certified Board Behavior Analyst, Teri, Inc.; Karen Ritter, Licensed Clinical Social Worker - in private practice; and Cherryl Baker, School Counselor, Mission Hills High School.

•  Kaplan will present a graduate school application and admissions workshop, followed by a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) workshop.
