Policy: Use of "/public" web page area at CSUSM

Purpose of the "/public" directory:

This directory was created on the web server at CSUSM to give students and guests a place to store personal web pages. Official CSUSM business belongs in the Campus Wide Info System where it will be tracked, entered into standard menus, backed up to tape regularly and generally maintained with the rest of the CWIS data.

Personal home pages then, represent the information and interests of individuals on campus. As applies to all use of campus computing equipment, no commercial or for-profit activity is allowed.

Just like the messages you post, the material you publish may not contain obscene, discriminatory or other information inconsistent with the use of computing equipment on campus. Use this handy form to make a personal web directory within the "/public" directory.

Use of images:

Images, which are not "personal", should be submitted to the webmaster for storage in the appropriate area on the server; this allows everyone to use these public graphics to enhance their HTML page(s). We count on you to add to our collection and we are further motivated by the fact that images take up a (comparatively) large amount of disk space so we don't want several copies of an identical image on the server. Personal images (e.g. pictures of your dog, spouse, vacation, etc.) may be stored in you r directory in the public area on our server.

How to submit graphic images for public use:

1. When you find or design an image suitable for public use place it in:
• /public/uploaded_lines (for lines)
• /public/uploaded_icons (for icons 1in square, or smaller)
• /public/uploaded_images (for images 1in square, or larger)


***This directory is checked regularly and it's contents are evaluated and stored in the proper directory (see below)

Use of CGI programs: We don't allow you to use private CGI programs for personal pages.

Penalties and problems: If we find something in the public_html area that violates our policies, we'll warn the owner that it needs to be modified or removed. A lack of response will result in us making the material unavailable and eventually it will be removed. If you leave t he campus your public web page will be removed when your account is deactivated. 

Disk Quota: There is a limit on the amount of space you can occupy in the public_html directory. This falls under the standard disk quota. You can get your disk quota raised for school-related activities by contacting quotaadmin@csusm.edu.
