Faculty & Staff Intro to Computing Guide

Getting an Account

A support staff member in your department should have your CSUSM username and password. If they do not, please have your support staff member contact the Faculty and Staff Help Desk. Once you are given your username and temporary password you will need to change your password.

Acquiring a Computer

Your computer is located in your office with a white State of California sticker and a colored Computer/Refresh sticker on it. If you have a new office without a computer or need a different Operating System, please have your support staff member contact the Faculty and Staff Help Desk. Adjunct Faculty please consult your support staff member to discuss your computer needs.

Computer Training

IITS provides free computer training classes. Please check the training website for classes, dates, and times.

Getting Software

Your computer comes with pre-installed software. Additional software for state owned equipment on campus is available. Please visit the Software Section on the Faculty/Staff Help Desk Website for more information. Software for work related home computers [MS Home Use] is also available for PC’s only. Please contact the Faculty and Staff Help Desk for more information.

Backup

When a Faculty and Staff member logs into any computer on campus, they will have a “Home” directory in which to safely save their documents. All documents should be saved in this manner because this folder has the benefit of nightly automatic backups. In addition, if there was a hard disk crash, system corruption, or the computer was refreshed, your documents would remain safe and accessible.

  • Note: You will not be able to access your ”home” directory when you are off campus, unless you use Citrix, which is available by request for an additional fee.

Anti-Virus

The campus uses a multi faceted approach to protect the campus community. All incoming mail with attachments are scanned for viruses and the desktop systems have protection as well. Virus definition files are automatically updated on an hourly basis.

Security

We have an obligation to protect information stored on our computer systems from unauthorized access. Sharing passwords is a violation of the IITS Computer Policies.

We require all Faculty and Staff members to change their password every 12 weeks.

All passwords must have the following to be valid:

  • At least eight characters in length
  • At least one lower case letter
  • At least one upper case letter
  • At least one number
  • Can not use words that can be found in a dictionary

    Example password- Sp2d2rm2n
