Where have we been with WebCT
Statistics
- As of 1/14/99--36 courses for 272 students since April 1998. That's 29.4 MB of "course files," 83.8 MB of "internal files," 66.6 MB of "backup files," for 179.8 MB total file space.
- As of 3/31/99--43 courses for 500± students. That's 45.4 MB of "course files," 132.8 MB of "internal files," 114 MB of "backup files," for 294.5 MB total file space.
Talk about Metrics and passwords protection... and how they are used within the dynamic of the class.
- Student Tracking, Page Tracking
- Query by student information to generate student information lists
Common tools--discus them and tell how they are limiting and expanding instruction.
- My Record, My Progress, Search, Compile, Glossary, Resume Session, Bulletin Board.
- There is still no good way to proctor an online exam--<sarcasm>relegating them to learning rather than evaluative tools</sarcasm>.
- Default organizational structure in WebCT is outline based and fairly rigid--though it can be bypassed.
Question of how much to use technology--traditional vs. augmented vs. online.
- Because it's password protected you may use any part of WebCT in a traditional course and that part will be secure; it will also generate WebCT metrics.
- Philosophical/pedagogical ramifications--deserve mention (but that's another presentation).
Where are we going with WebCT
New WebCT tools:
- Ability to interface with removable media (like a CD) as part of the WebCT course (you can link to files on removable media).
- Whiteboard
- Compiled C++ vs. perl (slightly smaller course sizes and faster speeds when displaying pages)
- WebCT vs. CBT
WebCT to DataPortal
- What mechanism can we provide faculty who want to take their grades from WebCT (or Excel) and import them into DataPortal?
Support of WebCT
- I have started a program of project based support where students (and staff) who work with faculty to develop courses will also provide support throughout the semester (for the course(s) they worked on).
