Using the
Student Presentation Tool
in WebCT

gem_red.gif (110 bytes) General information about group presentations in WebCT:

The presentation tool lets you view other students' presentations as well as post your own. Clicking on this icon divides the browser window in two columns. The left column lists the groups and their respective presentations. Clicking on a group name in this column lists the login ID's of the members in the right column while clicking on a project link spawns a new browser window containing that group's presentation. The group(s) to which you belong will have an [Edit Files] button next to its name. Clicking on this button will take you to the presentation file manager where you can upload and organize your presentation files.

Note: You must name your starting file index.html otherwise the project name will not be hyperlinked to your presentation.

This help document will not teach you to make HTML pages. This is beyond the scope of this document and your course. If you do not know how to create HTML pages, save your presentation as plain text and upload that (you must still name it index.html even if you save it as plain text).

gem_red.gif (110 bytes) To create or edit your group presentation in WebCT:

There are two formats I recommend for your presentations: text or html.

If you have an HTML editor and are familiar with it, I recommend this richer style for your presentation. It will allow you to show images and format the text of your assignment.

You may, optionally, type up your assignment and save it as text (or .txt). This will allow you to share all your written content with the class even though plain text is not so beautiful as HTML.  If you use the plain text format (you name a plain text file "index.html") your presentation will look like one huge paragraph (no indentation or breaks).  I recommend that you have your index.html be an HTML file that links to your plain text documents.

Once you have typed and saved your presentation in either HTML or plain text you need to move it from your local disk to your WebCT presentation area on the server.

Moving your presentation to the server:

As stated above, click the [Edit Files] button next to your group’s name to view the presentation file manager.

Your presentation is saved on your local disc and it needs to be on the server for all to see it.

  1. After clicking the [Edit Files] button next to your group’s name...
  2. Select the "Upload a file" radio button under "File Options" and you will be presented with the upload screen.
  3. Click "Browse" and pick your file (single click it) and click "Open"
  4. Click the "Upload" button (after verifying that your file path is displayed in the "Filename" box and verifying that you have selected the "Destination folder" that you want).
  5. WebCT will refresh the presentation file manager window and you will see your presentation file in the Destination folder you had selected.

***Be sure your presentation is called index.html (or index.htm) or the others in your class will not be able to see it.

gem_red.gif (110 bytes) To view another group’s presentation in WebCT:

Click on the presentation tool icon on your course homepage and, under the "Project" column (in the table) you will see a blue hyperlink to the presentation for the corresponding group. Click the hyperlink to view that group’s presentation.

If the text in the project column is "None," then that group does not have a presentation to view or they did not name it "index.html" and there is no link to their file(s).

gem_red.gif (110 bytes) A note for the course designers (instructors):

You may always see all student presentation files in all groups associated with your course (even the ones not named "index.html").  Click the "Manage Files" in the Navagation Control Panel and you will see your course files displayed.

Under the folder "My-Files" you'll see a sub-folder called "student_pres" if you click on this folder name to display its sub-folders, you will see that they are named acordingly to your student presentation groups.  Within each folder you have access to that group's files.
