Another great Robot Expo happened on December 14th with kids from our local elementary school joining in on the fun.  Many thanks to the Department of Physics faculty, the Society of Physics Students, and the STEM Ambassadors for a successful event!

The Physics Department set up a solar telescope at Double Peak Park on Tuesday, June 5th, to view a rare transit of Venus, which happens twice a century. They were featured in this North County Times article.

Dr. Michael Burin, Physics, serves as host for Frontiers in Science.  This is a semester long speaker series, co-sponsored by The Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, UCSD, the Office of Graduate Studies & Research, and the Office for Training, Research & Education in the Sciences (OTRES).  Spring semester speakers included Dr. Adam Burgasser (UCSD), Dr. Yongsheng Gao (Fresno State), Dr. Ralph Keeling (Scripps Institute of Oceanography), Mr. Leo Figueroa (Northrup Grumman), and Dr. James Jancovich (Biological Sciences, CSUSM).

Rocket car races!  The Society of Physics students and their advisor, Dr. Stephen Tsui, hosted their annual rocket car race at University Plaza during U-hour on April 26th.

The Spring 2012 Student Poster Showcase once again gave our CSM students a chance to discuss their research.  Featured students were Arthur Ledesma and Hans Rosales (BIOCHEM), Holly Russell (BIOCHEM), Maryrose Orencia and Jessica Spolarich (BIOCHEM), Jelena Jabloavnoic (BIOL Graduate), Sarah Lopez (BIOL), Jigneshkumar Patel (BIOT Graduate), and William Huegel (BIOT).  This event was co-sponsored by the Office of Graduate Studies & Research and the Committee for Undergraduate Research (CUGR).

The San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering 2012 kicked off a week of STEM-related events at CSUSM with Super STEM Saturday on March 17th. Dr. Michael Burin, Physics, serves as host for Frontiers in Science.  This is a semester long speaker series, co-sponsored by The Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, UCSD, the Office of Graduate Studies & Research, and the Office for Training, Research & Education in the Sciences (OTRES).  Fall semester speakers included Dr. Christopher Smith (UCSD); Ian Firth, Engineer, Hanson Aggregates West Region; Scott Kardel, Palomar Observatory; Dr. Raffi Aroian (UCSD); and Dr. Chris Holland (UCSD). 

Professor David Schaafsma, Physics, and and his students showcase robots during the 4th Annual Robot Expo.  Dr. Stephen Tsui, Dr. Edward Price, and Dr. Michael Burin, were also on hand to talk astronomy, math and science.  The North County Times and San Diego Union Tribune did a great job of covering this event for us.
