On March 12th, CSUSM hosted the 2013 Chemistry Olympiad Exam, run by the American Chemical Society. The CSUSM site was one of only two sites hosting this exam in San Diego. Thirty-five of San Diego’s best high school chemistry students came to take this exam at CSUSM to try to qualify for a position on the U.S. National Chemistry Team. If selected a student will go on to train with other U.S. team members at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, in preparation for the July International Competition in Moscow, Russia. The thirty-five students who came to CSUSM on Sunday represented the following schools:
Torrey Pines HS, Coronado HS, Westview HS, Cathedral Catholic HS, Mira Mesa HS, Rancho Bernardo HS, Canyon Crest Academy, Oceanside HS, The Bishop’s School, Mt. Carmel HS, La Costa Canyon HS, and Black Mountain MS. Our thanks to Dr. Paul Jasien, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, for coordinating this event!
Another great Robot Expo happened on December 14th with kids from our local elementary school joining in on the fun. Many thanks to the Department of Physics faculty, the Society of Physics Students, and the STEM Ambassadors for a successful event!
Frontiers in Science continues to be a popular speaker series on campus with a recent article in the North County Times. Our guest on October 8th, Dr. Rae Anderson from USD, was featured in this article about untangling DNA: http://www.nctimes.com/news/local/san-marcos/education-lecturer-untangles-mysteries-of-dna/article_692a174e-8a32-5b2a-b6e1-6a4774c733b9.html. Dr. Michael Burin, Physics, continues to serve as host for this series.

Dr. Michael Burin, Physics, serves as host for Frontiers in Science. This is a semester long speaker series, co-sponsored by The Center for Theoretical Biological Physics, UCSD, the Office of Graduate Studies & Research, and the Office for Training, Research & Education in the Sciences (OTRES). Spring semester speakers included Dr. Adam Burgasser (UCSD), Dr. Yongsheng Gao (Fresno State), Dr. Ralph Keeling (Scripps Institute of Oceanography), Mr. Leo Figueroa (Northrup Grumman), and Dr. James Jancovich (Biological Sciences, CSUSM).
Rocket car races! The Society of Physics students and their advisor, Dr. Stephen Tsui, hosted their annual rocket car race at University Plaza during U-hour on April 26th.
The Spring 2012 Student Poster Showcase once again gave our CSM students a chance to discuss their research. Featured students were Arthur Ledesma and Hans Rosales (BIOCHEM), Holly Russell (BIOCHEM), Maryrose Orencia and Jessica Spolarich (BIOCHEM), Jelena Jabloavnoic (BIOL Graduate), Sarah Lopez (BIOL), Jigneshkumar Patel (BIOT Graduate), and William Huegel (BIOT). This event was co-sponsored by the Office of Graduate Studies & Research and the Committee for Undergraduate Research (CUGR).
The San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering 2012 kicked off a week of STEM-related events at CSUSM with Super STEM Saturday on March 17th. We had over 50 science-related activities along with a fashion show and Rubik's Cube competition. Dr. Jackie Trischman, Chemistry, helped coordinate this successful event with a number of other faculty and students on hand. Thank you! http://www.nctimes.com/news/local/san-marcos/san-marcos-launching-students-interest/article_7fd6dfd4-415f-5cc5-a5a0-ccf1875f077e.html?mode=story
