CSM has several speaker series that occur during the fall and spring semesters. Topics are related to all areas of STEM research and given by guests from local industry and academia, as well as experts from our own campus. These series include Frontiers in Science, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), and the Office for Training, Research & Education in the Sciences (OTRES).
The 2014 Celebration of Faculty Scholarship and Creative Activity was held on Friday, April 11th. CSM faculty presented their research on planetary formation, how obesity impairs the immune system, Bacterial Curli, HPLC detection in coffee and chocolate, intermolecular interactions to build supramoleculra assemblies, and nanoparticle composites.
Rocket Car Races are always fun, especially when you take on your rivals from Palomar College! A great time with music from the CSUSM Tukwut Jazz Ensemble took place on Thursday, April 24th.
As the kick off for the San Diego Festival of Science & Engineering, close to 6,000 people joined us for Super STEM Saturday on March 15th! Co-hosted with The Classical Academies and sponsored by ViaSat, Northrop Grumman, Genentech, and Palomar Health, families from all over southern California joined us for a day of STEM-related activities. Last year's Biotech Beach Career Connection has morphed into the STEM Career Connection, which took place on Thursday, March 27th. This was a networking event to meet employers in a variety of fields and industries and was attended by over 100 of our CSM students.
For the sixth year, the Physics and Computer Science students put on a successful Robot Expo! Local elementary classes learned about robots, engaged in STEM activities with our STEM Ambassadors, and took tours of our science buildings.
Chancellor Tim White visited CSUSM and spent time in the cell culture lab and a Physics class in Science Hall II before wealking over to the STEM Center in Academic Hall and speaking to our STEM Center Ambassadors. He learned more about the Supplmental Instruction program and talked to representatives from our student organizations. CSM has over 100 volunteers working in two buildings with 23 of our faculty on a variety of research projects! Seventeen students were awarded stipends to assist with their summer research and participated in a Summer Scholars poster presentation on Friday, August 9th, for the campus community.
