San Marcos Track & Field Home from Nationals with Two All Americans and Top Marathon Runner

The men’s and women’s track and field teams competed Friday and Saturday, May 28-29, 2004, at the NAIA National Track and Field Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. Nineteen Cougar athletes qualified for nationals this year.

Senior Cara Rumble, whom Coach Steve Scott predicted months ago could be the top runner in the nation, took first place in the women’s marathon with a near-record breaking time of 2:49.30. The current women’s record of 2:49.14 was set in 1992 by Amber Anderson of Midland Lutheran. Back in April, Rumble completed the La Jolla Half Marathon with the third fastest female time, 1:25.28. Rumble, who was named an All-American in cross country during the fall 2003 season, was named an All-American for her efforts in the marathon.

Senior Kris Houghton was named as the Cougars’ other All-American for his third-place finish in the men’s 5,000 m run with a time of 14:44.15. In 2002, he qualified as an All-American in the same event.
