Program Requirements

Program requires a minimum of 30 graduate level units. Twenty–one (21) units must be taken in residence at CSUSM.

  • EDUC 602     Schooling in a Multicultural Society
  • EDUC 622     Research Methods in Education
    • Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement in 622
  • EDUC 698     Master’s Thesis / Project

English Learner Compliance Requirement

Students who do not possess a California Teachers of English Learners (CTEL), Cross-cultural Language & Academic Development (CLAD) Authorization, or an SB2042 credential, must include an electronic portfolio, along with the following coursework: 

  • EDUC 602    Schooling in a Multicultural Society
  • EDUC 606    Foundations of Reading & Writing Instruction
    or
    EDUC 646    Second Language Acquisition: Research & Practice
  • EDUC 614A  Reading & Writing Assessment
    &
    EDUC 614B  Reading Certificate Field Experience
    or
    EDUC 641    Sociocultural Contexts of Language & Learning
  • EDUC 647    Multicultural Curriculum & Application
    or
    EDUC 612    Literacy Development for Struggling Readers & Writers
    or
    EDUC 613    Reading & Writing Strategies for Mono/Bi-lingual Learners

These additional courses are not required if graduate student already has a CTEL, CLAD or SB2042 credential.

Total Units: 30 units are required for a Masters of Arts in Education.

GPA of 3.0: Any grade less than a B- will be subject to review.
