Palliative Care Chaplaincy Specialty Certificate Launches

SAN MARCOS, Calif.; Feb. 20, 2013 –  HealthCare Chaplaincy and The California State University Institute for Palliative Care  –  two leaders in their fields – have joined forces to create a new online certificate course to support chaplains and other spiritual care providers with the delivery of palliative care to patients and their families in hospitals, hospices, long-term care facilities, and elsewhere.

The Face of the American Educator: Addressing the Latino Male Shortage

In January 2010, the College Board of Advocacy & Policy Center issued “The Educational Crisis Facing Young Men of Color”. As shown in their research, Latino men have low high school graduation rates and low college enrollment due to the lack of successful Latino role models in the education system. California State University San Marcos and Encuentros Leadership have partnered to present an Educational Leadership Symposium designed to address this issue. Our mission is creating a continuously engaged community of leaders promoting Hispanic education that will extend beyond our one day event.

CSUSM Event Addresses Latino Male Shortage in Education

San Marcos, Calif. — California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) is hosting an educational leadership symposium next month to address the low attendance and graduation rates of young Latino men in college. The symposium will take place from 8 am to 12 pm on Saturday, March 9, at Mt. San Jacinto College, Menifee Campus.

The event, which is open to the public, is a collaborative effort between CSUSM and several community organizations, including Encuentros Leadership. Community leaders, educators and students interested in learning more about this important cause are encouraged to attend.

Two CSUSM Students Named Semi-Finalists for Presidential Management Fellowship Program

San Marcos, CA – CSUSM students Doug Gora and Arvin Tahami have been selected as semi-finalist for the highly coveted Presidential Management Fellowship Program or (PMF).  It’s a program started in 1977 that has matched outstanding graduate students with exciting Federal grant opportunities. The PMF Program is a great way to work in a leadership role and perform valuable service while jump-starting a career. Every year there are only 500 selected applicants out of roughly 10,000 submissions. The two CSUSM students named as semi-finalists are pursuing their Professional Science’s Master’s in Biotechnology.

Completion of the degree program enables individuals to sit for the NCLEX examination for RN licensure.

CSUSM to Launch "Advanced Spanish for Medical Personnel"

October 17,2012 San Marcos, CA – As the number of Spanish-speaking patients entering the healthcare system each year continues to increase, the number of Spanish speaking medical personnel remains insufficient to bridge the communication gap.  California State University San Marcos is launching a Spanish language course this spring, Advanced Spanish for Medical Personnel, designed to mitigate this issue.  Advanced Spanish for Medical Personnel (SPAN 314C) is a semester long course of intensive oral and written practice at the advanced level.  Students will focus on vocabulary development, simulation and communication and will actively engage in immersive learning of the Spanish language relative to the healthcare system.

Laine worked for awhile as a technical writer, administrator and a research associate in the defense industry but she was laid off twice. Rita was simply trying to find a first job in the biological science field.  Both had earned their undergraduate degrees in biology and expected they would be able to find steady work relatively easily. Realty hit them by surprise.
