Going Green
San Diego Metropolitan
September 1, 2008
Doug Newman, director of the National Energy Center for Sustainable Communities, is the keynote speaker for the Practicing Sustainability conference to be held Oct. 10 at the Cal State San Marcos campus.
Entrepreneurs, business leaders, municipal governments, investors and other professionals will focus on building socially responsible and sustainable enterprises. The one-day conference will inform attendees about the possibilities in today’s new green economy and how to apply the concepts and theories of sustainability to real-world projects.
A former senior official with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Newman has worked for more than 25 years to advance sustainable community design and development in the United States and abroad.
"Within the next 25 years, the United States will design, construct and remodel more than half of all the structures in this country," says Newman. "This equates to 213 billion square feet of built space and an unprecedented opportunity to build our homes, offices, public facilities and whole communities to a new level of energy and resource efficiency. California will lead the nation in this effort and the municipalities and the development industry in San Diego County will be among those leading the state. This conference will inform attendees about the wide variety of products, services and ongoing initiatives in the region that are contributing to this effort, and about the opportunities that exist for public and private entities to benefit from them."
Concurrent sessions led by speakers with practical experience will focus in-depth on the 3 E’s of sustainability: Economics, Environment and Social Equity. Local business and vendors will offer products and services related to the 3 E’s will be onsite.
"We are excited that the university is able to organize this meeting of the minds of the region’s movers and shakers to discover how we can practice sustainability," says Scott Gross, director of professional programs for Cal State San Marcos Extended Learning. "By gathering together experts who can support a dialog about sustainability theory and practice and examine solutions to very real problems, this conference will serve as a springboard for our region."
