Workplace Bullying

CareerBuilder’s 2012 survey revealed that 35% of Americans are bullied at work. Workplace bullying is recurring abusive acts aimed at humiliation and manipulation –including such behaviors as yelling, silent treatment, extreme criticism, uber-excessive micromanagement, and spreading rumors. Targets of bullying behaviors experience depression, burnout, anger, hopelessness, and lower job satisfaction, to name only a few of the long list of repercussions. Bullies also cause the organization’s bottomline to suffer as work product and quality is reduced, effective communication is lost, turnover and absenteeism is rampant, a hostile workplace culture spreads, and workers’ compensation and health costs rise. In fact, researchers estimate that an organization will spend up to $100,000 per bully per year.

According to research on workplace bullying from the last 25 years, traditional conflict management strategies are not the answer to workplace bullying– and thus special knowledge is needed to effectively eradicate it.
