Medical Coding & Billing

Program Overview

Prepare for a new career in the medical coding and billing field, one of the fastest-growing fields in allied health. In this program, you gain hands-on, practical experience working with the main coding manuals in the field: the ICD-10 and the CPT. You also are introduced to the ICD-10-CM. In your studies, you explore the basics of medical coding, medical billing and medical terminology. You also learn about the necessary medical terminology, insurance guidelines and compliance requirements, medical billing functions, and legal and ethical issues. 

Upon completion of this program, you are fully prepared to begin working in a professional medical office. You will also be prepared to take the Billing and Coding Specialist Certification (BCSC) exam through the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA).

The demand for qualified candidates in this field is increasing steadily with 29,000 new jobs expected in the field by 2024. (10-year growth projection, Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Learning Outcomes
  • Understanding the origin of medical language and how to analyze the components of a medical term
  • Assessing the responsibilities assigned to insurance billing and coding specialists and electronic claims processors
  • Understanding the responsibilities of the billing and coding specialist to protect patient rights under HIPAA
  • Demonstrating a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of body systems and related medical terminology in order to properly process clean claims
  • Utilizing the ICD‐10-CM manual, including V codes, E codes and the Neoplasm and Hypertension tables
  • Demonstrating a basic understanding of the ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS
  • Utilizing the CPT manual and the various guidelines
  • Demonstrating diagnostic and procedural coding
  • Describing basic guidelines for submitting insurance claims
  • Identifying solutions for denied and rejected paper and electronic claims
