What is International Baccalaureate?
International Baccalaureate Preparation
International Baccalaureate Program Candidates
In response to the overarching need to bring an international perspective and deeper understanding of people and their cultures to the classroom, CSUSM now offers courses of study recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization. These courses develop teachers' understanding of the principles and practices associated with the IB PYP and MYP. Students who successfully complete one of these courses of study are eligible to apply and register for the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning. The program prepares teachers (K-10) to serve in schools that implement the IB curriculum.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The IB encourages students to ask challenging questions, to critically reflect, to develop research skills, to learn how to learn, and to participate in community service.
In order to prepare educators to teach the IB model, CSUSM is authorized to offer the Global Teacher Studies and Preparation: International Baccalaureate Primary and Middle Years Programs. The course of study is a sequence of four classes, including two academic classes and two field study classes. The successful completion of this course of study qualifies participants to apply for the IB Certificate in Teaching and Learning, a certificate that verifies the candidate has completed the comprehensive training to work in an International Baccalaureate PYP or MYP World School.
This certificate will enable teachers to increase their qualifications and competitiveness in the educational workforce. Our convenient and affordable program, with curriculum offered through online meetings, allows greater access and collaboration with educators.
The candidates for this class are newly credentialed teachers, experienced teachers, teacher leaders, site administrators, teachers already working at IB World Schools, and teachers new to IB. Nine of the course of study units in this program can be applied to the Masters of Arts: General Option.
Please note: A Teaching Credential is not required. However, students are responsible for locating a school to complete their field study. Please contact your local school for processes and requirements.
