Master of Biotechnology, A Professional Science Master's (PSM)
CSUSM's biotech master's degree program is the premier PSM biotechnology degree in San Diego. This program was created to meet the biotech industry's demand for scientists who also have a background in business. What's more, our program is designed to meet the needs of working professionals, so you can earn your degree part-time, with online, evening, and weekend classes.
Our 2-year program combines advanced coursework and laboratory training in biotechnology with core business courses, such as accounting, management, and marketing. Students learn business and intellectual property law, regulatory issues in biotechnology and scientific communication methods, as well as completing internship and residency applications designed to facilitate thesis research.
Cohorts begin every fall semester. Now accepting applications for Fall 2013 (see How to Apply)!
PSM = Science, Technology, & ManagementThe CSUSM Master of Biotechnology program (a Professional Science Master's) was modeled after other successful programs, built by advisors from the biotechnology industry and critique from university administration and faculty.
"The PSM is an innovative graduate degree designed to allow students to pursue advanced training and excel in science without a Ph.D., while simultaneously developing highly-valued business skills without an MBA. Programs are characterized by combining rigorous study in science with skill-based coursework in management, law, intellectual property and regulatory affairs," says the Council of Graduate Schools. PSM programs emphasize writing and communication skills and require a final real-world project or team experience in a business or public sector enterprise.
The Master of Biotechnology is a two-year cohort program comprising 38-semester credit units. A cohort is a group of students who work through a curriculum together to achieve the same academic degree; all their classes are guaranteed. Because they are accepted into the same program, take their classes together, and graduate together, students in cohorts tend to form a strong support system and professional network that benefit them during their degree program and beyond.
Designed to accommodate the schedules of working professionals, the program may be completed on a part-time basis and includes evening, weekend and online courses as part of the curricula. The program will include: 1) laboratory/technology-rich exposure in biotechnology, 2) MBA-level business core courses, and 3) industry-related fundamentals. In addition to dedicated faculty, the program will provide leading edge and real-world exposure from guest lecturers and instructors from industry/business leaders from the San Diego biotechnology community.
