Cohorts begin every fall semester. Now accepting applications for Fall 2012 (see How to Apply)!
A cohort is a group of students who work through a curriculum together to achieve the same academic degree. Because they are accepted into the same program, take their classes together, and graduate together, students in cohorts tend to form a strong support system and professional network that benefit them during their degree program and beyond.
The CSUSM Master of Biotechnology program (a Professional Science Master's) was modeled after other successful programs, built by advisors from the biotechnology industry and critique from university administration and faculty.
The Professional Science Master's degree (PSM) is sweeping the nation with over 200 PSM programs expected across 100 universities by 2010. "The PSM is an innovative graduate degree designed to allow students to pursue advanced training and excel in science without a Ph.D., while simultaneously developing highly-valued business skills without an MBA. Programs are characterized by combining rigorous study in science with skill-based coursework in management, law, intellectual property and regulatory affairs," says the Council of Graduate Schools. PSM programs emphasize writing and communication skills and require a final real-world project or team experience in a business or public sector enterprise.
The PSM is an innovative graduate degree designed to allow students to pursue advanced training and excel in science without a Ph.D., while simultaneously developing highly valued business skills without an M.B.A. PSM degrees, by their design, combine advanced discipline-specific course work with activities that develop those communication and technical skills that are highly valued by non-academic employers. The purpose of a PSM degree is to prepare students for careers in technology-oriented business or government where workforce needs are increasing.
The Master of Biotechnology is a two-year cohort program comprised of 38-semester credit units. Designed to accommodate the schedules of working professionals, the program may be completed on a part-time basis and includes evening, weekend and online courses as part of the curricula. The program will include: 1) laboratory/technology-rich exposure in biotechnology, 2) MBA-level business core courses, and 3) industry-related fundamentals. In addition to dedicated faculty, the program will provide leading edge and real-world exposure from guest lecturers and instructors from industry/business leaders from the San Diego biotechnology community.
