Types of Online Classes

Asynchronous
Asynchronous learning happens when communication between people does not occur simultaneously. Some examples of asynchronous e-learning include self-paced courses. Other asynchronous courses are instructor-led. In these types of programs/courses, an instructor provides assignments, answers questions, leads discussions and grades student work. All class activities are conducted online. Students complete work online and interact with classmates and instructor through online discussions. While there are certain deadlines and possible live chats/dicsussions, the pace of study is really set by the student and the work is done according to the student's own timeframe.

Synchronous
Live or Synchronous learning means that communication occurs at the same time between individuals and information is accessed instantly. Examples of synchronous e-learning include real-time chat, and video/audio conferencing and virtual classrooms. This method of distance learning offers the opportunity for live discussions of ideas with other online students, classroom students and/or instructors.

Blended/Hybrid
Some distance learning programs/courses involve both synchronous and asynchronous methodologies. Often called mixed mode, blended or hybrid learning, these programs use a combination of traditional face-to-face lectures, and online activities such as e-mail, discussion boards and the like.
