AP English Language and Composition

Instructor Bio:
Educational Background
Bachelors of Arts from San Diego State, 1970, dual major in English and Political Science.
Masters in Education (1991) with an emphasis in policy studies, educational technology and cultural diversity.
Teaching Background
Over thirty-five years teaching for San Diego Unified School district in multiple grade levels and subjects. Five years at a traditional junior high School (Memorial Junior High School), two years at an alternative K through 12 school, (John Muir Alternative), nine years in a nationally recognized math and computer science magnet school grades 7 thru 12, (Samuel Gompers Secondary Magnet School) and over 20 years at a traditional high school, (Patrick Henry High School). During this time period I have taught all levels of English and social studies classes from regular to Advanced Placement classes in English Literature, Language and Composition, United States Government, United States History as well as an after school class for students who have failed their previous experience in a credit recovery program (19 years). Currently teaching 9th grade pre-AP advanced, 9th grade collaborative with special education, and 11th grade AP Language and Composition.
Consulting Experience
I have taught teaching training programs for the College Board since 1993. These weekend and weeklong programs emphasize curriculum pedagogy and methodology in areas of English instruction both in literature and composition instruction at secondary grade levels. These programs have been in California, Washington, Montana, Utah, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida, Hawaii. Currently consulting with the MET (Measuring Effective Teaching) research project funded by the Gates Foundation
University Teaching Experience
I have given weeklong seminars at Stanford University, Sacramento State University, California State San Marcos University, University of California at Riverside, University of Utah, and currently at the University of San Diego on teacher preparation for language arts instruction.
National Evaluation Experience
I have been reader, table leader, and question leader for scoring the Advance Placement English Language and Composition examination, training high school and college teachers for scoring and evaluating student composition. I am currently a table leader for the 2012 English Language and Composition Test.
Awards
Teacher of the year for my school multiple times, mentor teacher working for new teachers within the district for ten years, and two-time nominee for teacher of the year for San Diego County.
