Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD)
at Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary School
Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) is a model of professional development with proven replicability in more than 120 school sites. Our GLAD key trainers, Gabriella Gomez and Hugo Orozco, will provide teachers with research, theory, and practical effective strategies that promote academic language, literacy, academic achievement and cross cultural skills. Tied to English Language Development (ELD) standards, the model trains teachers to use local district guidelines and curriculum in providing instruction in multilingual classrooms.
GLAD training results in teachers renewed commitment to high expectations and high standards for all students. The result for students has been continuous gains in standardized test scores as well as renewed involvement in a classroom that is not only student-centerd, but also fosters a sense of identity and voice.
GLAD is a United States Department of Education, OBEMLA, Project of Academic Excellence, a California Department of Education Exemplary Program, a model reform program for the Comprehensive School Reform Design, and training model for five Achieving Schools Award Winners. It was the recommended K-8 project by the California State Superintendent of Schools for teachers of English learners. It is also highlighted as a California Department of Education "Best Practices" program for Title III professional development funding.
The next training will take place on:
February 13 and February 15: A two-day workshop covering research/theory and strategies of the project GLAD curriculum model
~ AND ~
February 16 - February 19: Four-day classroom observation and planning*.
