Leave of Absence

Undergraduate

Before the Leave of Absence, the "Out-One" Term

Undergraduate students who have enrolled in classes at CSUSM for at least one semester may choose to not enroll in classes for one semester and still remain 'continuous enrollment' (i.e. remain an active, matriculated student and maintain catalog rights). This is called an "out-one term".

Remaining unenrolled for more than one semester

An undergraduate student who has exhausted his or her “out-one term” in the prior semester and who needs to remain un-enrolled for an additional semester may, under some circumstances and subject to certain restrictions, apply for an educational leave of absence. An undergraduate leave of absence may be granted for the following documented reasons:

  • attendance at another accredited institution of higher learning, or
  • the health condition of the student prohibits attendance, or
  • military duty/deployment

To submit a request for leave of absence please complete the Undergraduate Leave of Absence form and submit to the Office of the Registrar, prior to the first day of classes for the semester requested.

Leave of Absence (LOA) cannot be submitted for first semester at CSUSM. A student must have completed one term in order to request an LOA.
