Department Chair of Social Work,
12-month appointment (year-round)

Salary Range:  Commensurate with experience

California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) seeks a Department Chair for a 12-month faculty appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (depending on qualifications), who will provide vision, leadership, and administrative direction for a new MSW program in the early stages of CSWE accreditation.  CSUSM has become one of the fastest growing campuses in the CSU system.  When completed (projected for 2030) the CSUSM campus will accommodate 25,000 full-time students on a 304-acre campus.  Providing access to a high quality education and preparing the leaders of tomorrow remain at the core of what we do.  CSUSM embraces and symbolizes twenty-first century learning.  We offer hands-on and collaborative learning experiences, cutting edge technology and academic programs relevant to the rapidly changing global environment.  This position is currently classified as a 12-month appointment (year-round) but may be converted to an Academic Year appointment depending upon the needs of the college or department.

Minimal Qualifications:  A Master’s Degree in Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program and a DSW or Ph.D. in Social Work or a doctoral degree in a closely related field.  At least five years of tenure-line teaching experience in a CSWE-accredited MSW program with a demonstrated record of success in teaching and externally –funded research commensurate with the qualifications for Associate Professor at CSUSM.  Three years of academic administrative experience, and the ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with colleagues on an ethnically and culturally diverse campus. 

Desired/Preferred Qualifications:  Two years post-master’s experience in Social Work, administrative experience with significant management responsibilities, experience hiring and mentoring faculty, demonstrated commitment to diversity, leadership experience in a professional organization and a strong commitment to faculty governance are desirable.  Prior experience with CSWE accreditation and experience as a Social Work Department Chair/Program Director/Dean, Associate Dean, or Program Coordinator are very desirable.

  • Leadership throughout CSWE accreditation and ongoing evaluation process
  • Program leadership and advocacy
  • Faculty and staff recruitment, supervision, mentoring, and evaluation
  • Budget development and administration
  • Development of relationships with other universities, community organizations, external funding organizations, and alumni
  • Program , college, and university committee service
  • Recruitment and retention of high-quality faculty and staff
  • Teaching in area(s) of expertise
