Engagement and Inclusion Librarian

Senior Assistant Librarian  (Bilingual, Spanish and English)

 The University Library at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) seeks an Engagement and Inclusion Librarian, a position designed to support the University and University Library’s goals for community engagement, inclusive excellence, and student success. Supported by a strategic plan framework and an institutional infrastructure for inclusive excellence, the candidate will work collaboratively across campus on initiatives aimed at creating an inclusive community and fostering co-curricular user engagement. This includes participating in CSUSM's efforts to engage minoritized and/or underrepresented communities; CSUSM is designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI), and has recently finalized a new campus Diversity & Inclusion Strategic Plan.

The incumbent will build relationships with relevant faculty, student, and staff organizations and identify partnerships for outreach to underrepresented and/or minoritized communities, with particular focus on CSUSM’s social justice and student inclusive excellence centers (including the Black Student Center, Gender Equity Center, Latin@ Center, LGTBQA Pride Center, Cross Cultural Center, DREAMER Resource Office, and Veterans Center). The Engagement and Inclusion Librarian will provide leadership for the library’s co-curricular outreach and engagement initiatives by sustaining and enhancing an established series of student-centered programs responsive to changing University curricula, including the “Context” Library Exhibit Series and the Library Award for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity. Reporting to the Dean of the Library, the applicant will work collaboratively with library faculty and staff to support the development of inclusive and representative programming and services that are accessible and meet the needs of all CSUSM’s students.

As an integral member of the User Services Department, this position explores emerging trends in critical librarianship, and contributes to the development of forward-thinking approaches to the delivery of Library services that reflect an organization committed to actualizing socially and economically just services and environments on behalf of our user communities. The Engagement and Inclusion Librarian directly leads the work of the Library Outreach Communication Specialist and Chairs the Grassroots Outreach (GO) Team, a creative cross-Library group that plans and implements Library outreach and engagement initiatives. The Librarian also provides direction and supervision to the Library Services Specialist II (LSS II) in overseeing outreach projects and programs and in collaboration with LSS II, hires, trains, and provides lead work direction to student assistants responsible for supporting Outreach programs. The Engagement and Inclusion Librarian partners with stakeholders across the Library to support and achieve its goals.

The successful candidate must be bilingual in English and Spanish and must demonstrate cultural fluency, awareness of the needs of underrepresented and/or minoritized populations, knowledge of contemporary trends in critical librarianship and/or social and economic justice, and a demonstrated potential for achievement in library community engagement.

Specific Duties

  • Provide leadership and vision for the library’s co-curricular outreach and engagement programming. Chair the Library’s GO Team, a creative cross-Library group that plans and implements Library outreach and engagement initiatives like Student Orientation and Pause for Paws.
  • Sustain and enhance an established series of student-centered initiatives responsive to changing University curricula, including the Context: Library Exhibit Series; the Library Award for Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity; and programming for the campus Common Read program. Schedule may include evenings and weekends.
  • With assistance from the Outreach Communication Specialist, manage, organize and stage museum-quality co-curricular art exhibits and associated events.
  • Provide lead work direction to the Outreach Communication Specialist, Library Services Specialist, and student assistants.
  • Engage with student, faculty, staff, and community organizations on initiatives related to diversity and inclusiveness and work collaboratively across campus to support student success and other initiatives related to CSUSM’s designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI).
  • Translate Library information into Spanish language, as needed. Interact with Spanish-speaking communities, such as parents and other family members at student orientation events.
  • Design, implement, and assess library services and programs to underrepresented and/or minoritized students, with special emphasis on HSI and AANAPISI populations, and social justice and student success centers.
  • Work collaboratively with Library and campus stakeholders to assess library outreach to diverse student populations; develop and gather data to make evidence-based, user-focused decisions about services and programming. 
  • In partnership with other CSUSM organizations, engage with the community and with educational partners to provide support for students and to improve pathways to higher education for the region.
  • In collaboration with library faculty selectors across diverse subject areas, evaluate and select scholarly materials in support of underserved populations.
  • Provide assistance at public service points and/or online.
  • Serve on University Library Standing Committees as appropriate.
  • Pursue a strong research agenda within the field of academic librarianship or job-related field.
  • Actively participate in library, university and/or professional-level service commitments, and in library activities and events.

Minimum qualifications

ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent. Demonstrated potential for success in user engagement and/or inclusion initiatives within an academic library. Demonstrated success in collaborative work focused on the academic library programming and outreach. Bilingual in English and Spanish. Demonstrated potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion under the Library's criteria for professional performance, scholarship, and service. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Desired/preferred qualifications

Professional experience in an academic library. Demonstrated success in user engagement and/or inclusion initiatives within an academic library. Demonstrated success in collaborative work focused on the academic library user experience. Experience in organizing and staging museum-quality interactive art exhibits and associated events. Demonstrated experience supervising or directing the work of staff. Demonstrated expertise in the intersection of library environments and the user experience. Knowledge of contemporary open access and open educational resource initiatives. Teaching, training, and/or instructional design experience. Published/presented research within the field of academic librarianship or a job-related field. Participation in local, regional or national organizations. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated intercultural competence with diverse groups in professional performance, research, and/or service.
