University Police
The purpose of the University Police Department is to consistently provide ways to promote and preserve a safe and secure academic environment, to deliver quality law enforcement and community services in a professional and sensitive manner, and to establish honest and effective partnerships with the campus community.
Activity
- With the assistance of Federal funding grants the department has increased its ability to have two police officers on duty at all times (24/7).
- The department responded to the increased activity generated by the opening of student housing on campus.
Grants
- During the year the department implemented over a quarter of a million dollars ($278,200) in grants for communications, emergency response and safety education.
- The department completed the hiring of four police officers provided by $300,000 Federal Department of Justice Universal Hiring grants.
- Received a Community Oriented Policing Grant ($198,700). With the funds the department upgraded our outdated communications system. Some of the funds went towards improving our emergency response.
- Entered into a partnership with IITS to purchase special equipment for our telephone system from the grant. The equipment will allow the communication center to call every telephone on campus and place a real time message over the speaker about an emergency. This will be very useful for alerting building occupants to evacuate.
- Received a $50,000 Homeland Security grant to purchase items to support emergency operations. The focus of the grant was equipment to address threats or targets for Chemical Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosive (CBRNE). The department trained officers at the national (CBRNE) center. Coordinated this grant with Environmental Health & Safety to identify response, detection and rescue equipment needed for a CBRNE campus incident.
- Received a $25,000 Homeland Security grant to purchase of an emergency command vehicle,a fully equipped Ford Explorer with a multi purpose communication system.
- Received a $4,500 grant from the Alcohol and Beverage Control in conjunction with San Diego County Sheriff’s Department to reimbursement overtime cost for alcohol related safety enforcement.

Some of the topics covered include: reporting crimes, observation skills, handling difficult people, medical emergencies, and general safety awareness.
