Clarke Field House/University Student Union

The M. Gordon Clarke Field House/University Student Union serves as the center of the campus community by developing and maintaining facilities which enhance the quality of campus life, and supports the educational mission of the University through social, recreational, cultural, and educational programs.

  • Participated in the FAS Values Survey and reviewed the results as a team. As a facility that requires staffing on an average of 100 hours each week, effective communication was identified as an area of improvement. Several significant steps were taken throughout the year to enhance internal communication and recognition, such that it would benefit the team and customers.
  • Participated in internal training in the areas of Human Resources, Budget Reconciliation, Risk Management, PeopleSoft, FERPA, Food Handlers, and CPR/First Aid/AED.
  • Represented the department at various conferences that support our mission, including the CSU Auxiliary Organization Association, the National Association of College Unions International, the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, the National Association of College Personnel, International Dance and Exercise Association, and CollegeNet – Resource 25.
  • Developed and successfully implemented an improved orientation process for new users to the CFH/USU.
  • The University Student Union Advisory Board (USUAB) recommended and received Presidential approval for increasing community access of the CFH/USU.  Developed internal processes for selling and tracking “sponsored memberships.”
  • Implemented plan for hiring student operations crew, who now provide assistance to building events during evening and weekend hours when there is no facility services support available.  This allows for the CFH/USU to book multiple evening and weekend events and offer faster turn-around times between events.
  • The USUAB selected six new student members to serve during the 2005-2006 academic year.
  • Launched CFH/USU web site to provide increased customer access and service.
  • Developed and conducted electronic survey for all event hosts that have used the CFH/USU to date with the goal of gauging internal customer satisfaction and seeking areas of improvement. Over 70% of those surveyed responded, with the overall response yielding positive results and feedback. A specific area of improvement had been identified as providing enhanced electronic-based services for event planners utilizing the CFH/USU.
  • Expanded cash handling at the CFH/USU to include checks, credit cards and cash.  Established a change fund to more effectively meet the needs of CFH/USU customers.
  • Chaired the Sports Medicine Task Force and procured all purchases for the dj Ortho Sports Medicine Room, to be located in the CFH/USU.
  • Launched the inaugural campus film series was launched in Fall 2004. This project continued through the year and was a successful collaboration between the USUAB, Student Life and Leadership (SLL), University Village Apartments (UVA), Associated Students, Inc. (ASI), the Vice President of Student Affairs (VPSA), and the CFH/USU.
  • Assisted the USUAB in planning and successfully collaborating with ASI, College Republicans, College Democrats, and the Progressive Activists Network (PAN) to host a successful Election Night event. Over 200 students attended the event on a Tuesday evening, of which 99% of the students had voted in the Presidential Election.
  • Designed, procured and installed interior donor signage for the CFH/USU, including a donor recognition wall at the main entrance, and an exterior building sign.
  • Held a successful Halloween at Hogwarts event as a healthy social alternative, with over 70 attendees including students, staff, faculty, and families. This event was co-sponsored with a student organization, Coalition of Magic.
  • Hosted a “themed” food drive event in conjunction with Monday Night Football. Close to 200 items were donated by students and all food was provided by community sponsors and the USUAB.
  • CFH/USU and the USUAB hosted “Finals Frenzy” for students studying for final exams. This annual program included extended building hours, laptop computer lab, three evening meals, as well as free snacks and beverages. The entire conference center was reserved for student use throughout finals week. Local business supported the event as in previous years, as well as the Dome.
  • USUAB elected to allocate Donor Funds to retro-fit the volleyball court for competitive play, which included a much-needed resealing of the floor. This modification should also satisfy future NCAA II requirements for collegiate play, as well as allow Club and Intramural volleyball teams to host home matches.
  • Wellness Month was a huge success with over 500 students, staff and faculty attending the second annual Wellness Expo. Wellness used the wheel as the programming model, inspired by Student Development Services.
  • USUAB approved sole use of the Grand Salon for a six-week summer enrichment camp program. A successful collaborative effort with UVA to provide housing made this project successful and generated significant revenue and exposure for the campus.
