Clarke Field House/University Student Union
The M. Gordon Clarke Field House/University Student Union serves as the center of the campus community by developing and maintaining facilities which enhance the quality of campus life, and supports the educational mission of the University through social, recreational, cultural, and educational programs.
People:
- Conducted student assistant training for the fall 2006 semester to ensure students were well trained to service Clark Field House/University Student Union (CFH/USU) patrons
- Adapted and provided feedback to enhance staff communications due to CFH/USU operation seven days per week, over 94 hours per week, which requires non-traditional means for effective and seamless operations
- Participated in Mock Emergency Exercise with City of San Marcos and campus Emergency Response Team
- Mapped all staff computers to a shared “Z Drive” for easy access; staff members copied files to shared system and met to review content, file names, etc., and assigned a gatekeeper
- Provided a significant amount of training and professional development opportunities to the CFH/USU staff: AV training, Food Handlers Certification, Fire Extinguisher and Safety training, Imagine 21, Association of College Unions International Training Conference, CPR/AED Certification, FrontPage web training, R25 Annual Users Conference, PeopleSoft training, Association of College Professionals Association National Conference, National Intramural-Recreation Sports Association National Conference
Processes:
- Submitted new requisitions for all “open accounts” that relate to events held at the Mangrum Track and Soccer Field
- Made changes at the front desk to better serve customers and to simplify the steps needed to be taken by student assistants when processing paperwork
- University Student Union Advisory Board (USUAB) approved the concept of a “frequent user” for the conference rooms and developed a policy to implement that will benefit the campus community
- USUAB simplified AV rates so one single rate applies to usage, regardless of time frame, to make billing more efficient and reduce staff time required for monitoring usage
- USUAB crafted and approved a new mission statement for the building that is more in line with services provided to the campus and the role the CFH/USU plays in supporting the University
- USUAB participated in the planning and implementation of the first student programming day, a collaborative effort between several units to provide support to student leaders
- During the 06-07 budget process, made changes to better facilitate the operational expenditure and reconciliation process for the CFH/USU and the USUAB
- Went live with E-RFU process for the campus community to reserve space at the CFH/USU
- USUAB reviewed and revised Board Operating Rules to increase student member responsibilities and accountability for the 06-07 academic year
- CFH/USU participated with other campus stakeholders in the process mapping for campus event scheduling model, to be implemented during the 06-07 fiscal year
Campus Community:
- Collaborated with UVA, Facilities, and Café Catering to host SuperCamp; CSUSM became only the third university in California to host this prestigious camp for middle and high school students
- CFH/USU co-sponsored with USUAB, Arts and Lectures (A&L) Committee, and ASI to host “College Survivor Night” during Welcome Week, including a guest speaker from the reality show “Survivor” and a significant assortment of food donations from the community
- Provided event support to A&L for large-scale events, to include live streaming audio and video
- Hosted the “Relay for Life” through ACS
- Hosted Charlie and Chocolate Factory Halloween Party attended by over 100 members of the campus community
- USUAB and the CFH/USU co-sponsored the bi-annual tradition of Finals Frenzy during the fall and spring final exams. Fed students dinner, provided beverages, snacks, and other exam-related support; took building off-line for student use during the majority of final exam week and extended the building hours
- Hosted the 2nd annual Orientation Team retreat, providing 24-hour overnight staffing for the event
- Hosted 50th District Congressional Debates on March 23, 2006 and on May 24, 2006
- Over 300 people attended the Annual Wellness Expo, including students, staff, faculty, and a multitude of community partners
- Recorded over 42,000 visits to the recreational facilities during the fiscal year
Resources and Regulations:
- Purchased a protective floor covering for the Hunter Gymnasium to allow usage as a non-recreational venue
- The USUAB made a formal recommendation to the President for the future of the Cougar’s Den Convenience Store operated by the Foundation. It included early termination of the Foundation lease and use of CFH/USU donor money to fund capital improvements needed to provide a student-friendly, non-commercial venue that can be used for programming and social gathering, based on student surveys
- Revised USUAB budget to include a line item for supplementing special event labor costs for student organizations
- Retrofitted indoor volleyball court to accommodate Club Sport, NAIA, and NCAA play
- A CoBA Senior Experience team worked on increasing awareness of the CFH/USU within the campus population and recommended means for successfully marketing its resources for use
- Significant collaboration between CFH/USU, Athletics, ASI, and Facilities provided for the renovation of the lower field to accommodate increased use by students on campus, including Intercollegiate Soccer, Club Sports, Intramurals, and Kinesiology
